Abstract

Purpose

The present study undertakes an extensive review of the causes of service failures in artificial intelligence (AI) technology literature.

Design/methodology/approach

A hybrid review has been employed which includes descriptive analysis, and bibliometric analysis with content analysis of the literature approach to synthesizing existing research on a certain topic. The study has followed the SPAR-4-SLR protocol as outlined by Paul et al. (2021). The search period encompasses the progression of service failure in AI from 2001 to 2023.

Findings

From identified theories, theoretical implications are derived, and thematic maps direct future research on topics such as data mining, smart factories, and among others. The key themes are being proposed incorporates technological elements, ethical deliberations, and cooperative endeavours.

Originality/value

This research study makes a valuable contribution to understanding and reducing service defects in AI by providing insights that can inform future investigations and practical implementations. Six key future research directions are derived from the thematic and cluster discussions presented in the content analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relative impacts of the cognitive dissonance on brand switching (BS) and satisfaction level (SAT) by considering the mediation role of purchase regret (PRG) in these relationships in an online shopping context.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was collected from 354 participants, and structural equation modeling and mediation analysis were conducted to test the conceptual model hypotheses.

Findings

The findings revealed that the cognitive dissonance positively affects PRG. Also, the study indicated a negative and nonsignificant relationship between cognitive dissonance and SAT and a negative significant relationship between cognitive dissonance and BS. In addition, a positive and significant correlation was found between PRG and BS. Furthermore, the results revealed that PRG mediates the relationship between cognitive dissonance and SAT.

Originality/value

This research provides a novel contribution by examining the impact of the cognitive dissonance on BS and SAT and uncovering the underlying mechanism of how and under what conditions cognitive dissonance promotes BS and SAT in an online shopping context.

Abstract

Purpose

India’s rapid economic growth has triggered a significant transformation in its logistics sector, fueled by comprehensive reforms and digital initiatives outlined in the National Logistics Policy. Smart warehouses, equipped with cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, AI and automation, have taken center stage in this evolution. They play a pivotal role in India’s digital journey, revolutionizing supply chains, reducing costs and boosting productivity. This AI-driven transformation, in alignment with the “Digital India” campaign, positions India as a global logistics leader poised for success in the industry 4.0 era. In this context, this study highlights the significance of smart warehouses and their enablers in the broader context of supply chain and logistics.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper utilized the ISM technique to suggest a multi-tiered model for smart warehouse ecosystem enablers in India. Enablers are also graphically categorized by their influence and dependence via MICMAC analysis.

Findings

The study not only identifies the 17 key enablers fostering a viable ecosystem for smart warehouses in India but also categorizes them as linkage, autonomous, dependent and independent enablers.

Research limitations/implications

This research provides valuable insights for practitioners aiming to enhance technological infrastructure, reduce costs, minimize wastage and enhance productivity. Moreover, it addresses critical academic and research gaps contributing to the advancement of knowledge in this domain, thus paving the way forward for more research and learning in the field of smart warehouses.

Originality/value

The qualitative modeling is done by collecting experts' opinions using the ISM technique solicits substantial value to this research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the associations of a buyer’s online buying intentions, followed by shopping cart abandonment. The objective of the study is to investigate the determinants that trigger a buyer for abandoning the shopping cart, despite the consumers’ intent to buy. This study aims to examine the factors that leads a consumer to abandon the shopping cart, despite the intention to purchase.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional data from 354 millennials was undertaken for the current study. These young consumers were identified to examine the conceptual model, which was conceived using the theories of planned behavior, expectation disconfirmation, along with a few seminal works of consumer behavior and psychology.

Findings

The results show perceived risk to be a mediator to a buyer’s online buying intention and shopping cart abandonment, and process satisfaction moderates the association among the two variables in the presence of perceived risk.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted with a sample of Indian millennial consumers; hence, its findings may not be generalizable.

Originality/value

This study concludes with important implications for both academicians and e-tailers, which could prove useful in reducing cases of abandonment of shopping carts, due to which, e-tailers do tend to lose out young consumers resulting thereby in revenue loss.

Abstract

Purpose

Firms use design capability across the globe to compete and increase sales, e.g. Apple. However, the payoff from design know-how has been overlooked thus far. Academic research lags in this space despite the intersection of sales, technology and design in practice. This paper provides researchers and managers with implications of the interplay between design capability and technological market conditions to enhance a firm's sales.

Design/methodology/approach

Firms' capability design, and sales impact have been studied in this paper across different technological market conditions. Primary technological conditions of the industry under which firms operate are captured, which are technological intensity (TI), technological competitive intensity (TCI) and technological maturity (TM). Their interplay has been studied using panel data analysis, examining fixed and random effects.

Findings

Design is an important, interesting and non-imitable capacity that yields positive firm execution results. It provides an urgent differentiator and improves deal development. This study found that all four hypotheses are generally supported. The main finding is that, provided underlying technology is good, design significantly improves sales, but design alone cannot substitute for poor technology.

Practical implications

The results of this study link the three technological environment conditions, namely, TI, TCI and TM with sales growth. The authors find that design can and does add to superior performance, provided technological excellence exists prior. But, in the absence of good technology, design alone will hinder performance.

Originality/value

This paper examines the effect of firm design capability on sales growth. The paper finds a positive moderating effect of TCI and TM but a negative moderating effect of TI. The researchers believe these aspects of the design have not been studied before.

Abstract

Purpose

The concept of women’s empowerment is widely regarded as a crucial factor in facilitating the integration and involvement of women in the development process. The cornerstone of women’s empowerment is widely acknowledged to be social and political engagement coupled with economic independence. This research aims to contribute to understanding the effects of access to digital financial services by microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Indonesia on women empowerment, specifically focusing on women at the bottom of the economic pyramid. This empowerment is assessed through social, political and economic dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilizes logistic regression (LR) to examine the effect of access to microfinance digital financial services on the social, political and economic determinants of women’s empowerment. The analysis is based on the threshold theory of decision-making. The present research includes a sample of 1,644 female entrepreneurs, namely ultra-micro small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), actively participating in microfinance activities in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Nusa Tenggara Barat and Sulawesi Selatan.

Findings

The findings indicate a statistically significant effect between access to credit and the two variables under investigation, namely social and economic empowerment. However, no significant effect was seen between credit access and women’s empowerment. Following this, a positive effect has been identified between credit access and several aspects of women’s empowerment.

Research limitations/implications

The research establishes a framework and substantiates that women’s empowerment relies on economic autonomy, social engagement and political involvement. MFIs have been identified as significant contributors to this process. This will assist practitioners in formulating policy and implementing interventions to promote women’s empowerment, particularly in the context of digital microfinance. The results of this study will provide valuable insights for guiding future research endeavors in this field.

Originality/value

The work exhibits originality and serves as a valuable resource for those who recognize and appreciate its significance. This report is the first study to examine the correlation between female entrepreneurs’ access to digital MFIs and women’s empowerment dimensions.

Abstract

Purpose

The Indian pharmaceutical industry currently faces multiple challenges, including rising costs and slowing export growth, which in turn have limited its ability to expand presence in global canvas. Given the nature of sectoral dynamics, a pharmaceutical firm must undertake huge investments in R&D to introduce product innovation, in turn enhancing market share and sustaining profit streams. The development of novel medicines, confirmed by the granting of patent rights, provides a pharma company edge over its competitors. In addition, presence of innovator firms within the industry invigorates the sectoral value chain and raises efficiency. Hence, it is important to analyze whether granting patent rights enhances the exports of pharmaceutical products in the Indian context.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study explored this question using a simultaneous-equation framework. Specifically, the authors use the methods developed by Davidson and MacKinnon (1993) and Greene (2003) to obtain heteroscedasticity-consistent estimates. The time-series properties of the data were further probed, and robust estimates were used to test the theory. Methods developed by Baltagi (1981) have been used further to refine the authors’ estimations.

Findings

After controlling for relevant variables, it is observed that granting of patents caused a significantly positive impact on pharmaceutical exports. Furthermore, the change in the patent administration regime had a significant impact on patent fillings, which further impacted their exportability. Compared to patents granted patents filed had a higher impact on pharmaceutical exports.

Originality/value

This study attempts to apply the framework developed by Goldstein and Khan (1978) with necessary modifications to suit the context of a developing country. The application of the 3SLS method to estimate the export supply equation for pharmaceutical products is a novel approach to the research question in general and to the Indian context in particular. System autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity tests were performed to refine the results further.

Abstract

Purpose

Informal female entrepreneurs in emerging economies operate in challenging business environments. This research examines the competencies of informal female entrepreneurs (IFEs) to explore how they persist because and despite the unique set of challenges they face.

Design/methodology/approach

We undertake a qualitative study focusing on IFE in the Indian context. Using the abilities–motivation–opportunity (AMO) framework as a theoretical lens, we interviewed 14 IFEs to gain insights into their entrepreneurial challenges and understand how they address the challenges.

Findings

The results demonstrate that IFEs are prone to various challenges around the individual level, business challenges on an operating and functional level and other challenges rooted in their business environment. Further, the study sheds light on the competencies of IFEs on three fronts, namely, ability-enhancing competencies, including – technical skills, problem solving, communication and adaptability; motivation-enhancing competencies, including – self-motivation, resilience and optimism and lastly, opportunity-enhancing competencies, including – local-centric approach, networking and resourcefulness.

Research limitations/implications

The study highlights the nuanced settings of informal female entrepreneurship in an emerging economy context. By highlighting the challenges and competency interplay, our study opens novel avenues for the interrelationships to be studied in further detail.

Originality/value

Our study provides close insight into the everyday challenges of IFEs operating in informal economies. Their competencies and perseverance-related attributes contribute to the mainstream entrepreneurship literature, as these entrepreneurs exhibit unique competencies that allow them to thrive in challenging contextual settings. Their willingness to learn new skills, opportunity recognition, motivation and adaptability skills contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon of informal female entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on job demands-resources theory, this paper aims to investigate the impact of workplace spirituality on mindfulness and the subsequent effects of mindfulness on open innovation mindset and job embeddedness. Additionally, it examines the mediating role of mindfulness between workplace spirituality and key outcomes, including open innovation mindset and job embeddedness. Lastly, the study investigates the moderating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between workplace spirituality and mindfulness.

Design/methodology/approach

The research utilized multiple sampling techniques to collect data from employees across numerous sectors. A total of 197 viable responses were collected. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicate that workplace spirituality has a positive impact on mindfulness, which in turn increases employees’ job embeddedness and an open innovation mindset. Additionally, it was found that mindfulness mediates the relationship between workplace spirituality and both job embeddedness and open innovation mindset. Surprisingly and unexpectedly, the results indicate a negative moderating impact of self-efficacy between workplace spirituality and mindfulness.

Practical implications

Cultivating a sense of purpose and meaningful work, alongside mindfulness programs and recruitment practices focused on cultural fit, can enhance both employee retention and innovation.

Originality/value

Little to no research exists that clarifies how workplace spirituality impacts employees’ job embeddedness and an open innovation mindset. Notably, the mediating role of mindfulness remains unexplored. This study is among the first to explore the mediating role of mindfulness between workplace spirituality and outcomes such as job embeddedness and an open innovation mindset. Additionally, the moderating role of self-efficacy between workplace spirituality and mindfulness is almost absent in the existing literature. Lastly, the unexpected findings on the role of self-efficacy in this study open fresh avenues for future research.
