Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to detect the patterns of food-related lifestyles of university students, identify the groups of individuals based on these lifestyles and investigate their tendency to adopt innovative food products.
Design/methodology/approach
The data collected from university students in Croatia (n = 641) were analysed using factor and cluster analyses and a chi-squared test.
Findings
The findings revealed 11 food-related lifestyles and four groups of university students: “Convenience-oriented”, “Conscious consumers”, “Adventurous eaters” and “Family-oriented Cooks”. Adventurous eaters are the most interested in buying innovative food products, and many of them are food innovators (20%). Sampled individuals are open to new foods, and only a tiny percentage are reluctant to try new and unfamiliar foods.
Practical implications
The study provides recommendations on how marketers and food producers might target these consumers more efficiently and boost the sales of innovative food products.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature by (1) revealing food-related lifestyles among university students in Croatia, (2) developing the typology of consumers based on their lifestyles and (3) providing new knowledge of how food-related lifestyles affect the adoption of innovative food products.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to test whether a) differences existed in dissent expression between women in management and nonmanagement positions and b) the differences varied between white women and women of color.
Design/methodology/approach
Responses from 1,011 employed women in the US were analyzed for the study.
Findings
Results revealed that in management vs nonmanagement status, women employees were more likely to express upward dissent and employ dissent strategies that signified both influence and lack of influence in organizations. However, race-based differences existed in the expressions of some forms of dissent.
Originality/value
Research has shown that employees in management vs nonmanagement status express more upward dissent and employ dissent strategies that signify influence in organizations. However, can this be the case for women employees? Although previous research has explored dissent expression extensively in US organizations, women employees' dissent expression has not received much attention in social-scientific studies. In these studies, gender and race were treated as mere demographic variables to describe sample compositions despite these variables being influential factors in organizational life. Through an intersectional approach to identities, this study’s findings call upon organizations to address iniquities that limit dissent expression based on identity hierarchies.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the relationship between corporate tax avoidance and stock price crash risk and the moderating effects of corporate governance.
Design/methodology/approach
This study investigates the relationship between corporate tax avoidance and stock price crash risk using the sample consisting of listed firms in Vietnam for the period of 2011–2020 using panel regressions.
Findings
The authors find that there is a positive relationship between tax avoidance and stock price crash risk. Foreign ownership weakens the impacts of tax avoidance on stock price crash risk, while managerial ownership strengthens the impacts. Female Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and female chairpersons weaken this relationship. Board gender diversity and state ownership have insignificant moderating impacts.
Practical implications
These findings could help the stock market build better internal monitoring mechanisms to reduce the impacts of tax avoidance on future stock price crash risk. Investors can recognize the characteristics of corporate governance, especially foreign ownership, managerial ownership, female CEOs and female chairpersons when making investment decisions. The policy makers should consider policies to attract foreign investment and support women entrepreneurship.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to the literature on the impacts of tax avoidance on stock price crash risk in emerging countries. This paper is the first to investigate the influence of corporate governance mechanisms including state ownership, foreign ownership, female CEOs and chairpersons and board gender diversity on this relationship.

Abstract
Purpose
Social welfare, while it expresses the general well-being, happiness and quality of life of individuals and society, can also affect the social, economic and psychological situations of individuals and society. It is aimed at examining in detail the research trends and developments regarding the concept of social welfare within the scope of international research in the literature.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, the bibliometric analysis of the studies published between 1991 and 2023 on the concept of social welfare in the Web of Science (WOS) was analyzed with the VOSviewer (Version 1.6.9) package program.
Findings
This study indicates that 3,276 works on the topic of “Social Welfare” were produced. Examining the year-based distribution, 2021 has the most publications (381 works), making it the year with the highest number. Journal articles have the most publishing types, with 2,974 works. There are 3,276 published works, all in English. Upon analysis of the most frequently used keywords that were connected to one another in the study and were used at least twice, it was found that “child welfare” was the most used term with 214 repeats, followed by “social work” with 183 repetitions and “welfare state” with 154 repetitions. In terms of publications on social welfare, social work (1,233 works) and management (679 works) are the research disciplines with the most. In terms of the works, they produce in the field of social welfare, it has been shown that the USA (502 works) and the UK (650 works) are pioneers.
Research limitations/implications
Considering the limited interdisciplinary studies on social welfare and the gap in this field, it has become necessary for researchers, practitioners and policymakers to focus on this issue. This study is limited to the bibliometric analysis of English language studies published in the WOS database between 1991 and 2023 on the concept of social welfare on March 20, 2024, it is recommended to investigate similar studies in different databases in certain periods in order to explore research trends from the perspective of different disciplines.
Practical implications
This study with bibliometric analysis provides forward-looking insights into social welfare on the basis of research, practice and policy. The dominance of social welfare research by major publishing houses and leading academic institutions demonstrates the influence of this field in the literature. However, it should be noted that the promotion of different types of publications, such as books and book chapters, can contribute to the enrichment of the literature in this field. In particular, book studies with in-depth analyses and critical approaches can help expand the body of knowledge in the field of social welfare.
Social implications
By encouraging international conference papers, social welfare policies implemented in different countries can be discussed in the context of academics, experts and policymakers. At this point, it can be suggested that research in the field of social welfare should be expanded to cover different geographical regions and cultural contexts. Increasing social welfare work in regions such as Asia and Africa can contribute to a better understanding of societal issues in these regions.
Originality/value
Considering the limited number of interdisciplinary studies on social welfare and the gap in this field, it can be stated that this study is original in terms of revealing research trends on social welfare.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the risks and changes in consumer awareness associated with gender-based pricing, particularly women’s exclusive discounts, in Japan. By examining the case of Gyu-Kaku’s half-price campaign exclusively for women implemented in 2024, the study investigates the legal and reputational risks faced by companies and the rising awareness of consumer diversity and fairness.
Design/methodology/approach
A mixed research method combining qualitative and quantitative analysis was adopted. Social trends and expert opinions were grasped through news articles and professional insights, and users’ reactions on X (formerly Twitter) were statistically analyzed from the perspective of sentiment analysis.
Findings
It was suggested that gender-based pricing, while pursuing short-term profits, may significantly harm a company’s brand image and long-term profits by ignoring consumer diversity and fairness. In particular, the study indicates a possible link between increased criticism of women’s exclusive discounts and the rising dissatisfaction among young men, who perceive selective application of gender equality amidst a heightened awareness of equality. Additionally, there was a significant increase in negative posts about Gyu-Kaku on X, and even after the total number of mentions decreased, the proportion of negative posts remained high.
Originality/value
This study is an initial attempt to comparatively examine the extent to which gender-based pricing is accepted by consumers in Japan. In a field with few prior studies, it presents new perspectives and hypotheses, proposing directions for future discussions.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify the factors influencing the creation of a toxic workplace and to examine how to improve a toxic workplace in the electronics industry.
Design/methodology/approach
First, the factors that influence the creation of a toxic work environment were identified by reviewing the research literature. Then, the current status of each identified factor in Iran’s electronics industry was evaluated by developing a questionnaire. Based on the survey data, a relationship map between the factors influencing the toxic workplace was created using the fuzzy cognitive mapping technique. Finally, scenarios were designed to improve the toxic workplace.
Findings
The results show that the “workplace bullying” factor is the factor with the highest centrality in relation to other factors. The results of the scenario design indicate the effectiveness of the “unrealistic expectations at work” factor as a scenario trigger.
Originality/value
This study helps reduce the toxic workplace in the organization, which plays an important role in improving the employees’ work performance and the organization’s development.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the factors affecting the performance of smallholder oil palm farmers in Indonesia, with an emphasis on sustainable productivity.
Design/methodology/approach
The study involved interviews with regulators, practitioners and experienced farmers in Riau, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and the Bangka Belitung Islands, Indonesia. A confirmatory and explanatory approach was used to explore the relationships among farmer competency, social capital, institutional support, sustainable productivity and overall performance. Data from 757 farmers were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), while the analytical network process (ANP) method identified strategic priorities.
Findings
The results indicate that the sustainability of oil palm farming was low. Social capital, institutional support and sustainable productivity are the key performance factors. Sustainable productivity mediates these relationships. Farmers’ competence indirectly affects performance through sustainable productivity, social capital and institutions. Institutional support needs to be improved.
Research limitations/implications
This study suggests expanding sustainability indicators by following the latest standards of RSPO principles and criteria, simplifying language for better farmer understanding and assessing sustainability before and after policy implementation.
Practical implications
The proposed policy framework emphasizes social capital, institutional support and sustainable productivity to improve sustainability and effectiveness.
Social implications
This study highlights the critical role of social capital, institutional support and sustainable productivity in enhancing Indonesian palm oil farmers’ sustainability and performance.
Originality/value
This unique integrated approach combining PLS-SEM and ANP methodologies provides a comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting smallholder performance and data-driven strategic priorities for policy interventions.

Abstract
Purpose
This study, a theoretical article, aims to introduce new institutionalism as a framework through which business and management researchers can explore the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in organizations. Although the new institutional theory is a fully established research program, the neo-institutional literature on AI is almost non-existent. There is, therefore, a need to develop a deeper understanding of AI as both the product of institutional forces and as an institutional force in its own right.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors follow the top-down approach. Accordingly, the authors first briefly describe the new institutionalism, trace its historical development and introduce its fundamental concepts: institutional legitimacy, environment and isomorphism. Then, the authors use those as the basis for the queries to perform a scoping review on the institutional role of AI in organizations.
Findings
The findings reveal that a comprehensive theory on AI is largely absent from business and management literature. The new institutionalism is only one of many possible theoretical perspectives (both contextually novel and insightful) from which researchers can study AI in organizational settings.
Originality/value
The authors use the insights from new institutionalism to illustrate how a particular social theory can fit into the larger theoretical framework for AI in organizations. The authors also formulate four broad research questions to guide researchers interested in studying the institutional significance of AI. Finally, the authors include a section providing concrete examples of how to study AI-related institutional dynamics in business and management.

Abstract
Purpose
Drug prevention programs typically focus on providing information on the effects of drugs and developing refusal skills. However, there is evidence that adolescents use substances to cope with stress. As such, integrating mental health literacy is important in prevention programs. The purpose of this study was to test a video-based mental health and substance prevention program for Filipino youth.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used a cluster randomized trial and mixed methods design with 623 Filipino adolescents from 12 to 18 years old. The program consisted of six sessions focusing on stress, adaptive coping, effects of substances and drug refusal skills. It uses short psychoeducation videos along with self-reflection, and discussions to increase learner engagement.
Findings
Results revealed a significant increase in knowledge and negative attitudes toward substance of participants in the intervention group compared to the control group. Those in the intervention group reported improved use of adaptive coping skills particularly cognitive reappraisal, social support, problem-solving and relaxation compared to the control group.
Originality/value
This study adds to the literature on prevention from under-represented and non-Western contexts such as the Philippines. This study highlights how technology-mediated and integrated mental health and substance use programs can be useful in countries with few resources for mental health.
