Abstract

Purpose

The rapid evolution of technological infrastructure and analytical capabilities has facilitated the integration of big data analytics (BDA) across various sectors. This study aims to investigate the suitability of implementing BDA within academic libraries, addressing the demanding need for effective data utilization in contemporary educational environments.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is grounded in five critical components: data-driven culture, organizational infrastructure, employee responsibilities, management capabilities and the successful deployment of technology for BDA. An extensive literature review led to the development of a Likert scale-based questionnaire distributed on social media to collect data from university librarians in Pakistan. The authors were able to collect the data from 211 librarians. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyze the variables, while confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted using the AMOS to validate the research model.

Findings

The findings from the measurement model reveal significant positive correlations among all five components, underscoring their collective importance in facilitating the implementation of BDA. This formation is essential for addressing the evolving needs and academic requirements of users in the context of big data in a digital environment.

Research limitations/implications

The study acknowledges limitations about its focus on a single country’s perspective, which may affect the generalizability of the findings regarding the implementation process of BDA in academic libraries.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by highlighting the practices and capabilities of librarians in the era of big data as well as the requisite organizational infrastructure for the effective implementation of analytics in academic libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to unravel the complex coopetitive interactions in supply chains. It delves into the paradoxical relationship between cooperative and competitive interactions among supply chain entities, offering a comprehensive exploration of coopetition’s manifestations and management across various supply chain types.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a three-phase methodology, beginning with a scoping review to establish a theoretical framework, followed by a systematic literature review yielding 130 papers and concluding with correspondence analysis using similarity indexes. This approach facilitates a deep dive into the diverse aspects of coopetition, including its drivers, practices, outcomes and associated risks.

Findings

The research identifies three distinct types of coopetition in supply chains: technology-based, socially based and channel-based. These models are underscored by specific drivers and outcomes, with technology-based coopetition focusing on market competitiveness and operational capacity, socially based on trust and power dynamics and channel based on product characteristics. The study introduces five propositions for further investigation and provides a comprehensive typology of coopetition within supply chains.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s findings are limited by the scope of the existing literature and the chosen academic databases. Future research should empirically validate the proposed coopetition configurations and propositions, exploring their applicability in other, less studied supply chains.

Practical implications

The study offers practitioners a valuable typology and framework to understand and manage coopetition in their respective supply chains. This typology serves as a decision-making tool for identifying suitable coopetition strategies and maximizing their benefits while mitigating associated risks.

Originality/value

This study stands out for its unique approach to categorizing coopetition in supply chains, offering a novel typology that goes beyond the manufacturer’s perspective. It fills a significant gap in the literature by providing a broad view of coopetition, considering various supply chain types and their respective coopetitive dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study investigates the customers' behavioural intention to use voice-based artificial intelligence (AI) to find the appropriate hotels and resorts in an emerging nation. This study determines the influences of information quality, system quality, privacy, and novelty value on attitude and behavioural intention to use voice-based artificial intelligence to obtain the appropriate information and find the location of the hotels and resorts.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a purposive sampling method for collecting data from the respondents, who are customers of the hotels and resorts in Bangladesh. A self-administered survey questionnaire was used to obtain responses from 378 respondents. After collecting the data, the reliability and validity of the constructs and hypotheses were tested via partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The findings of the study indicate that information quality, system quality, privacy and novelty value have a positive and significant impact on attitude and behavioural intention to use voice-based AI assistant services in an emerging nation. However, system quality does not significantly influence behavioural intention to use voice-based AI assistant but it has an indirect significant influence on behavioural intention through the mediation effect of attitude.

Practical implications

The study’s findings provide essential guidelines for practitioners to understand the impacts of information quality, system quality, privacy, and novelty value on attitude and behavioural intention to use voice-based artificial intelligence to find the appropriate hotels and resorts to meet customers' needs and expectations.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature on technology adoption by highlighting the interconnectedness of various factors influencing users' behavioural intentions. The study’s focus on an emerging nation provides a valuable theoretical contribution. It highlights that user perceptions and attitudes towards technology adoption may differ from those in developed nations due to unique contextual factors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to understand how institutions influence a Geographical Indication (GI) region to create value over time. The study examines a Brazilian wine industry that has lasted for about a century, using ten recent years of primary data collection (2012–2022).

Design/methodology/approach

This paper developed a qualitative study that looks at coopetition and institutions and considers the GI as an institution. It collected the data from 33 representatives of the Brazilian wine industry in three stages (2012–2013, 2017 and 2022).

Findings

The results show that coopetitive strategies between Brazilian wineries are encouraged by both formal and informal institutions, which results in a GI becoming a collective institution. Value creation, however, drives new entrants aiming to achieve gains, and this risks destroying the GI due to the perception of lack of balance on value capture over time.

Originality/value

This study describes the creation and evolution of a GI for developing wine production in a particular grape-growing region in Brazil, which has, consequently, encouraged coopetition between supply chain agents leading to value creation. Most wineries, however, lack a value capture perception, which has resulted in the risk of value being destroyed by allowing new entrants into the cluster. The three stages of data collection and analysis provide an understanding of coopetitive strategies over the long term.

Abstract

Purpose

Although intellectual capital (IC) and human dynamic capabilities (HDCs) play a significant role in decarbonization processes, their measurement and reporting is under-researched. Hence, this study aims to identify the link between HDCs, carbon accounting and integrated reporting (IR) in the transition processes, investigating IC and HDCs in decarbonization processes to achieve net-zero business models (n-ZBMs).

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review with a concise bibliometric analysis is conducted on 229 articles, published from 1990 to 2023 in Scopus database and Google Scholar. Reviewing data on publications, journals, authors and citations and analysing the article content, this study identifies the main search trends, providing a new conceptual model and future research propositions.

Findings

The results reveal that the literature has rarely focussed on carbon accounting in terms of IC and HDCs. Additionally, firms face pressure from institutions and stakeholders regarding legitimacy and transparency, necessitating a response considering IR and requiring n-ZBMs to be developed through IC and HDCs to meet social and environmental requirements.

Originality/value

Not only does this study link IC with HDCs to address carbon emissions through decarbonization practices, which has never been addressed in the literature to date, but also provides novel recommendations and propositions through which firms can sustainably transition to being net-zero emission firms, thereby gaining competitive advantage and contributing to the nation’s sustainability goals.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examined the students' academic performance through psychological capital, academic engagement and academic persistence. It also investigated the function of psychological capital in mediating the relationship between academic engagement, persistence and performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilized a quantitative method and structural equation modeling using PLS-SEM version 3. A total of 900 questionnaires were issued to Chinese university students, and 814 data were analyzed.

Findings

Findings suggest that academic engagement and persistence significantly and positively impact psychological capital. Psychological capital is also mediated between academic engagement, persistence and performance. Additionally, the study made several recommendations for upcoming researchers and industry professionals.

Originality/value

Analyzing the pupils' academic achievement after COVID-19 reopening as it indicates their attention and engagement in the study. Although previous studies explored students' academic performance regarding the post-COVID effect, the role of psychological capital and engagement in academia in the study has been studied in a post-COVID context.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on signaling and social identity theories, the main objective of this paper is to suggest and validate a research framework to investigate the association of corporate social responsibility (CSR) perceptions with organizational attractiveness by uncovering the underlying mechanism of organizational trust.

Design/methodology/approach

By conducting regression analysis, the study hypotheses were tested with the data collected from a snowball convenient sample of 318 potential job seekers.

Findings

The study results revealed that prospective applicants' perceptions about a company's CSR undertakings are significantly associated with their trust in and attraction to the company. Noticeably, organizational trust partially mediated the direct relationship between CSR perceptions and organizational attractiveness.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the study results, some specific theoretical advancements and helpful insights have been highlighted for human resources (HR) practitioners in today's competing organizations. The paper ends by outlining key research drawbacks and directions for possible work in the future.

Originality/value

Despite the plausible underlying role of organizational trust in the link between CSR and organizational attraction, empirical studies of this theoretical phenomenon are still lacking in the context of pre-hire recruitment literature. This may be the first study that identifies organizational trust as a salient psychological factor through which job seekers' CSR perceptions become more instrumental in influencing their attraction to a firm.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to foster disaster risk reduction as identified by the Sendai Framework through understanding disaster risk mitigation and strengthening disaster preparedness at the community level.

Design/methodology/approach

Using qualitative and quantitative data from Quetta, Balochistan, the team collected primary data from 400 households using stratified random sampling with proportionate allocation through a survey questionnaire, along with fieldwork and group discussions. SPSS was used for the survey data for analysis. This paper identifies factors that promote community resilience through raising community awareness, preparedness and reducing risk.

Findings

Natural hazards including seismic shocks and their consequences such as avalanches and landslides remain serious challenges to vulnerable communities in developing and developed nations around the world. The results of this study reveal that despite being in an active fault zone with large-scale earthquakes, most respondents had little interaction with warning systems, no engagement with planning efforts and a minimum knowledge of evacuation procedures.

Practical implications

This study provides policy guidance to government and non-government agencies to optimize disaster management activities in pre- and post-disaster situations.

Originality/value

To the best if the authors knowledge, the study is the first of its kind in the study area focusing on risk reduction strategies including up-grading bottom-up engagement and community risk mitigation through grassroots educational outreach to build resilience and reduce community vulnerability to natural disasters.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study sought to determine the main themes employees discussed in online reviews associated with satisfaction (pros) and dissatisfaction (cons).

Design/methodology/approach

This study used qualitative content analysis to examine employee reviews working in India's largest food delivery company.

Findings

The analyses revealed the existence of seven themes: company environment, employees, salary, work–life balance, company culture and values, flexibility and favoritism. Negative themes were associated with the “work-life balance” and “favoritism” themes. The results provided valuable insights into online food delivery platform employees' overall experiences based on social media information and aided in identifying key themes associated with various satisfaction levels.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by uniquely utilizing user-generated content from an employment search engine as a novel data source to investigate the factors influencing satisfaction and dissatisfaction among online food delivery employees. This approach represents a significant departure from traditional survey-based methods, filling a gap in the literature by offering insights directly from employees' unfiltered perspectives. By leveraging this innovative methodology, our research provides a fresh and nuanced understanding of the experiences and concerns of online food delivery workers, thereby adding substantial value to the fields of organizational behavior and human resource management.

Abstract

Purpose

Nigeria presents something of an entrepreneurial paradox. Women in entrepreneurship dominate the economy, yet patriarchal structures dominate society. This article investigates how patriarchal factors impact entrepreneurial processes, in turn, creating unequal expectations of entrepreneurial opportunity.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts an intersectionality lens to explore how patriarchy is manifest for entrepreneurs. The reflective narratives of 30 entrepreneurs are analysed, provided through semi-structured interviews. An inductive qualitative approach accesses the gendered discourse of entrepreneurship as constructed by entrepreneurs. Within this discourse, the factors of patriarchy are exposed.

Findings

Findings reveal a multi-faceted patriarchy, with the informing factors of entrepreneurial gender roles, class and religion. The study explains how the interaction of these factors reinforce patriarchal ideals and create a variety of gendered images of what is acceptable entrepreneurial activity in Nigeria, and for whom.

Originality/value

This study contributes to growing insight on entrepreneurship in Africa and challenges linear arguments of entrepreneurship-as-emancipation for women. In complex and multidimensional contexts, entrepreneurs must navigate the intersection of factors sensitively, ensuring acceptance and fulfilment of societal expectations. The power of intersectionality as a theory of contextualisation is discussed.
