Abstract

Purpose

While big data analytics can spur innovation among firms, it is unclear whether it can effectively drive value creation, value proposition, value delivery and value capture to deal with disruptions and the ever-changing demands of customers. This study therefore aims to examine how value creation, value proposition, value delivery and value capture can be improved through big data analytics capability (BDAC). This study advances the discourse by investigating how the market environment and strategic orientations play significant but little-studied roles in enhancing or lessening BDAC’s impact on business model innovation (BMI).

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on dynamic capability and contingency perspectives, a model of five hypotheses was developed and validated using survey data from 208 managers of manufacturing firms in Ghana. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was used for the analysis.

Findings

The findings revealed that BDAC and strategic orientation (market and learning) directly influence the dimensions of BMI (value creation, value proposition, value delivery and value capture). The findings further showed that strategic orientations partially mediate the BDAC–BMI link. The authors also noted that the BDAC–BMI link is amplified at high levels of market dynamism.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that investing in BDA alone may not be sufficient to drive superior business model innovation. However, market orientation and continuous learning are crucial to fully realizing BDAC’s full potential in enabling value creation, value proposition, value delivery and value capture, especially in a dynamic market environment.

Originality/value

This study contributes to existing BMI literature by being the first to examine how BDAC facilitates value creation, value proposition, value delivery and value capture in developing countries. This paper also advances BM literature by theorizing and validating important but rarely studied roles of strategic orientations and market dynamism. Thus, this paper extends the understanding of the conditions and mechanisms through which the effect of BDAC on value creation, value proposition, value delivery and value capture can be optimized.

Abstract

As it is known, the accounting information system (AIS) plays a significant role in the business ecosystem by recording and processing financial and accounting data and reporting the produced information to all relevant parties for decision-making. However, its used methods and systems, including double-entry bookkeeping and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, have limitations, especially in terms of trust and reliability concerns for stakeholders and the possible scope for records manipulation and fraud. The application of blockchain technology is believed to enhance the reliability of the AIS and addresses many of its current limitations. Blockchain can offer numerous benefits if used to manage AIS functions through enhanced trust, reliability, and transparency, increased efficiency, reduced costs and fraud, improved accounting information quality and real-time accounting. Nevertheless, the adoption and implementation of blockchain in the AIS are associated with several technical and nontechnical challenges which are not easy to address and could limit the wide technology adoption in the immediate future. Considering that a full understanding of the benefits and challenges of adopting blockchain in the AIS still needs more clarification, this chapter examines blockchain technology and its implications for the AIS. It reviews blockchain characteristics and its benefits to the AIS, discusses its possible integration into the AIS, outlines adoption and implementation challenges, and suggests critical avenues for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to chart the history of tourism academia and offer observations as to its future development in the 21st century.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a limited review of the literature and the personal reflections of the authors as its main approaches.

Findings

In reviewing the multi-generational history of tourism academia, it became apparent that whilst we have become a more scientifically rigorous community of scholars, a challenge for the academy going forward will be how best to cultivate a spirit of understanding among different parts of the academy when presented with viewpoints that do not appear to coalesce with one’s understanding of “truth”.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to scholarly debates over the history and future of tourism academia by challenging the academy to reflect critically on its increasing diversity and how to incorporate diverse viewpoints into the tourism knowledge canon.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore and evaluate how sociodemographic, psychographic and situational factors jointly determine the satisfaction and expenditure of sports tourists, two key variables for the sustainability and development of sport tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

To meet the objective of the study, structural equation modelling was applied to data collected through a face-to-face survey of 520 sports tourists practising outdoor sports in the Valle del Jerte region (Cáceres, Spain) during the months of March and April 2024.

Findings

The findings revealed that older and higher income tourists experienced higher levels of satisfaction with sporting activities. Specifically, young women with a high educational and economic level were found to have the highest expenditure in the sports destination. Furthermore, it was confirmed that authenticity, distance and water sports activities had a positive impact on visitor satisfaction, and that tourist expenditure was influenced by local connection and all sociodemographic and situational factors considered.

Originality/value

This analysis contributes to the sport tourism literature by combining factors of different typologies into a single model and by incorporating expenditure behaviour as a dependent variable and the type of sport activity variable as a situational factor affecting expenditure. This approach expands existing knowledge by providing a more comprehensive view of the effect of sociodemographic, psychographic and situational factors on sport tourism, allowing destination managers to design effective strategies that optimise the satisfaction and expenditure of sports tourists.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the determinants of public willingness to comply with COVID-19 regulations to address the research gap at the intersection of public health and law enforcement within the unique sociocultural context of Taiwan.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing survey data from New Taipei City in 2021, the analysis involved multiple linear regression models to assess the influences of psychological conditions (i.e. distress and self-efficacy), community compliance and perceptions of government (i.e. general trust in government and specific perceptions of police procedural justice) on compliance tendencies while controlling for individual demographics.

Findings

The results indicated that self-efficacy, perceived community compliance, trust in government, and police procedural justice are positively associated with public compliance with COVID-19 regulations. Among these variables, trust in government and police procedural justice were identified as the most prominent factors, followed by self-efficacy and perceived community compliance. As demographic factors such as age, gender and education did not significantly affect willingness to comply, psychological, social and governmental influences are more powerful determinants of compliance than static demographic characteristics.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical evidence from Taiwan on the factors shaping public compliance during an unprecedented global pandemic. It highlights the importance of fostering governmental trust and enhancing police procedural justice during periods of stability to secure compliance with public health directives in times of crisis.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review research on mental health and well-being (MHW) in tourism, which the United Nations addresses in Sustainable Development Goal No. 3 (SDG 3). The authors also pinpoint future directions regarding how tourism can contribute to this goal from theoretical and practical standpoints.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors review the literature on MHW in tourism from the perspectives of tourists, residents and tourism workers.

Findings

Researchers have predominantly analysed tourists’ MHW outcomes through the lenses of positive psychology and tourism therapy; only a small number of studies have focused on MHW-related benefits and challenges in terms of tourism development for residents and tourism workers. Investigations of MHW in tourism require interdisciplinary approaches to reveal how tourism promotes diverse stakeholders’ mental health. Practically, there is an urgent need to incorporate tourism products and services into mental health care, and design tourism experience with positive psychology principles.

Originality/value

This study offers insights into fostering MHW through tourism. It specifically proposes theoretical and practical ways in which tourism might enhance MHW for various industry stakeholders, contributing to SDG 3.

Abstract

Purpose

The mechanical properties, including elastic constants and moduli, indicate the material’s stiffness and stability. Our calculations reveal that CuMg2GaS4 is a direct bandgap semiconductor, 2.18 eV. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure provides an insight into the bonding characteristics and charge distribution within the material.

Design/methodology/approach

This work presents a comprehensive investigation of the structural, electronic, optical, mechanical properties of the CuMg2GaS4 compound using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Unlike its counterpart CuMg2InS4, which exhibits a tetragonal WS structure, CuMg2GaS4 is found to be an energetically stable in the monoclinic phase.

Findings

The calculated effective masses of electrons (0.38 m0) and holes (1.28 m0) suggest promising charge carrier mobility within the compound. Furthermore, based on the evaluation of electronic structure and optical absorption properties of CuMg2GaS4 in relation with the redox potentials of water, this demonstrates its potential as a promising candidate for efficient photocatalytic water splitting under visible light irradiation. These findings contribute to the understanding of the structural and functional properties of CuMg2GaS4 and pave the way for its potential applications in optoelectronic and energy conversion devices.

Originality/value

The prime novelty is to employ ab initio self-consistent Full-Potential Linearized augmented plane wave + local orbital method (FP-LAPW + lo) and investigate the properties of CuMg2GaS4 of structural, mechanical, thermodynamic stabilities, linear optical response.

Abstract

This chapter describes the redevelopment of the Open Language Chief Executive Personality Tool (OLCPT), a language-based machine learning (ML) tool for assessing executives' traits along the five factor model (FFM) of personality (openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism). Whereas the initial release of the OLCPT demonstrated the viability of using supervised machine learning to unobtrusively assess executives' personality traits, recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) related to large language models (LLMs) warranted revisiting its development. After applying LLM embeddings and performing other updates, including expanding the training sample, the redeveloped tool (available at https://zenodo.org/records/10800801) achieved substantially higher convergent validity than the initial release. The updated tool also demonstrates strong discriminant validity and reliability, and it can measure traits not included in the initial version (narcissism and humility). These improvements demonstrate the potential value of continuously updating existing, computer-aided measures in strategy and management research. Yet, such efforts may not always be feasible or even necessary. Thus, we also use this chapter to offer guidelines for determining when updating similar measures is worthwhile, urging scholars to carefully consider how existing tools perform and the relevance of advancements to the technologies underlying them. We conclude with additional suggestions for advancing measurement in our field, including keeping up with emerging technologies, encouraging complementary approaches to enable triangulation, avoiding the use of advanced techniques without carefully considering their applicability in a given context, and being realistic about what we ask for during the review process and what we consider a meaningful contribution in our field.
