Abstract

Purpose

Present bias (PB) is a cognitive bias that stimulates the individual decision-maker to favour the present reward even over the higher reward in the future to avoid the uncertainty attached to the reward in an uncertain future. The article attempts to examine the prevalence of PB amongst Indians and the effect of such bias on savings and borrowings.

Design/methodology/approach

Secondary data on 47,132 respondents from the Financial Inclusion Insights, 2017 database was used in the study. The theory of self-control, which is captured by the widely accepted hyperbolic discounting model, was used to explore the presence of PB. Suitable statistical techniques and the binary probit regression model were employed to attain the objectives of the study.

Findings

The prevalence of PB was found amongst 8.2% of the sample respondents. The outcome of the study endorses the view of previous researchers that present-biased people tend to save less and borrow more.

Originality/value

Although the exploration of the role of various cognitive biases on financial behaviour is gaining momentum in recent times, there is a dearth of studies exploring the prevalence of PB and its implication towards financial behaviour, especially in the context of the emerging economy of India. The study makes an original contribution in this regard by using a very rich dataset of 47,132 individuals in the Indian context for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

The major shareholders may try to manipulate the stock price for tunneling after share lockup expiration, but the earlier studies focus on earnings management and do not consider other potential manipulation methods. Therefore, we explore the tone management of earnings communication conferences.

Design/methodology/approach

We take the China A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2007 to 2021 as our sample to examine how, why and when share lockup expiration of major shareholders affects tone management of earnings communication conference.

Findings

Firms tend to engage in tone management in earnings communication conferences when the lockup expires by increasing the optimism of the tone and decreasing the similarity between the responses and questions. The purpose of tone management is not for share reduction, but rather for improving market performance and better share pledge. The effect of share lockup expiration is weaker when the firm engages in real or accrual-based earnings management, and when the firm keeps higher accounting conservatism. In addition, in companies at growth and maturity stages, where executive compensation is high, institutional investor ownership is low and the controlling shareholder is a non-state-owned enterprise, the impact of share lockup expiration on the tone management becomes more pronounced.

Originality/value

Our study reveals the ways and purposes of tone management when share lockup expires, shows the timing preferences of tone management and helps identify the quality of information disclosure in earnings communication conferences, enriching the research on tone management and market value management.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the intersection of AI-generated learning materials and active learning strategies in higher education artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing about changes and opening up new possibilities for an improved and more efficient higher education. However, the argument is that its use in education/classroom should be informed by verifiable evidence as well as best practice, which this scholarly work helps build evidence-based research to assess this technology in higher education.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data was collected through structured questionnaire administered online via Google form. Based on the non-probability sampling technique, 300 higher education tutors and students across the UK were purposively targeted, out of which 218 (72.7%) response rate was achieved. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences, whereby regression, correlation and Chi-square tests were conducted to determine the statistical significance, direction and strength of the relationship between the measured variables.

Findings

This study revealed that AI-generated learning materials support active learning strategies that enable students to actively engage in their learning, likewise enabling students to develop deeper understanding of their course content with significantly better knowledge retention, which is critical to the learning process. However, findings further revealed that acceptance/regular use of AI-generated learning materials is still below par across the higher education institutions, and there is major concern that the benefits may not be fully realized due to barriers to adoption.

Research limitations/implications

There are limitations that future studies can improve on, especially in terms of methodology. Pragmatism is a philosophical research stance that integrates quantitative data collection with qualitative data (such as interviews) and will ask in-depth questions to gain holistic quality data for such empirical. Future studies can also improve on the research scope to allow for generalizability of findings and check for potential biases in the data collection, analysis and interpretation processes.

Originality/value

Despite the huge anticipation regarding how AI technology could transform teachers’ roles in higher education, concrete research into AI-generated learning materials and actual impact in facilitating active learning strategies and knowledge retention is currently lacking. This study presents theoretical models on AI acceptance in higher education and explored the Technology, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge framework to inform empirical information on how AI can support active learning strategies and students’ knowledge retention.

Abstract

Gymnasts worldwide have turned to media to speak out about their experiences of abuse in sport. More formally, services to report abuse have been recognised as important; however, we know little about athletes' experiences of the process. Therefore, we consider in this chapter how (former) athletes experience the process of reporting abuse and maltreatment. This chapter begins with a narrative poem that was created using direct quotes from an interview with a former gymnast, Lisa (pseudonym), who described her involvement with her national gymnastics federation's reporting process. We then examine reporting services and discuss the reasons why (former) athletes may not report abuse and maltreatment. As a conceptual framework, we present the pixie model of women's artistic gymnastics (WAG) as the root of the culture of fear, control and silence that prevents gymnasts from reporting their experiences, and discuss factors that enable the reporting of abuse and maltreatment. To illustrate the ways the WAG pixie model shaped Lisa's reporting experience, the poem presented at the outset of this chapter is extended to a narrative about her engagement with reporting processes. The chapter concludes with a call to put abuse and maltreatment on the sports governance agenda, the development of trauma-informed processes and further research on reporting abuse in sport.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the conservative Heritage Foundation's “Project 2025” and especially its comprehensive Mandate for Leadership, which provides a detailed plan for fundamental policy and administrative changes to be instituted in a Trump second term. It advocates an unparalleled concentration of executive power, elimination of the independence of the civil service and Department of Justice from the office of the president, and institution of permanent dominance of Trumpian conservatism. The specific focus is on the Mandate's proposed antienvironmental policies, which are weaved throughout the document and are designed to roll back sweepingly previous climate-change and environmental protection policies. Stressing maximal usage, production, and export of fossil fuel, the Trumpian “energy dominance agenda” is in polar contradiction to climate science policy aimed at decarbonizing the economy and society and averting catastrophic climate change and a “Hothouse Earth.” The Mandate's postfactual discourse combined with its advocacy of an all-powerful president and conspiratorial vision of the “woke” left as public enemy has definite protofascist overtones.

This chapter looks at a number of diverse elements that led to the rise of the digital banking industry. In this age of rapid digitisation, today's bank transactions and activities are mostly done on mobile phones or other smart devices instead of going back and forth between a traditional branch lobby. With more and more customers seeking banking services accessible around the clock from the palm of their hand, based on the numerous experiential data digital platforms have accumulated for many years in the field and other places, traditional financial institutions will have no way but to break open their thinking about how to deliver those services to think. Governments and their regulators are beginning to see the potential risks posed by the new digital banking technology and want consumer protection, competition put under even stricter conditions for players as well and system stability all guaranteed. Above all, it is evidence of something people cannot ignore: the sharp upward trend of cybersecurity risk in recent years. The advent of digitalisation eliminated any excuse for storing sensitive financial data without the most modern cyber defences. Then, at a further level, financial tech start-ups come up like crocuses in spring while Bigtech companies all over the globe are jumping into banking. Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce the concept of consumer impatience, empirically explore how it relates to time-based logistics performance (delivery speed and delivery timeliness) and discuss its impact on consumer satisfaction. This research argues that gaining insights related to delivery performance from a consumer’s perspective can help the development of more effective time-based logistics strategies for e-commerce home deliveries.

Design/methodology/approach

Hypotheses in this study are developed using attribution theory and tested with empirical data collected through an online behavioral consumer experiment. Middle-range theorizing is used to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that impact the relationship between time-based logistics performance and consumer satisfaction.

Findings

Findings indicate that consumer impatience with delivery speed and delivery timeliness play an essential role in the relationship between time-based delivery performance and consumer satisfaction. Issues with delivery timeliness are shown to have a more negative impact on consumer satisfaction than issues with delivery speed, while delivery communication is demonstrated to have a positive relationship with consumer satisfaction.

Originality/value

This empirical study adds to existing time-based competition literature by taking a consumer-centric perspective and bringing a largely overlooked but critical concept – consumer impatience – into the logistics and supply chain management setting. Middle-range theorizing allows for a conceptualized understanding of consumers’ delivery experiences that can help companies develop proactive actions in their time-based competition initiatives.

Abstract

Purpose

From the customer-relationship theory and attachment theory approaches, this study proposes a serial mediation model to examine how celebrity attachment influences event attendees' intentions in the celebrity endorsement process in the context of events.

Design/methodology/approach

Paper-based and online surveys were used to collect data from 759 Vietnamese respondents, aged 15 and above, who followed domestic or international celebrities and were interested in various events taking place in Vietnam. A serial multiple mediation model was evaluated through covariance-based structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results confirmed the cognitive, affective and hybrid cognitive-affective pathways among antecedents, celebrity attachment and event participation intentions.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies need to validate these findings across diverse cultural settings and larger participant pools to enhance their applicability. Exploring celebrity endorsement for events from an international follower perspective could offer valuable insights. Future research should consider these factors when interpreting results. It may benefit from conducting longitudinal or mixed-method studies to improve generalizability. Additional moderating variables are necessary, as research on the celebrity endorsement process for events evolves.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on celebrity endorsement within event marketing, emphasizing the customer-brand relationship and attachment theory. It extends existing research that primarily examines how celebrity attachment influences event attendees' intentions in the celebrity endorsement process by validating a serial mediation model.
