Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the factors affecting artificial intelligence (AI) implementation in the accounting industry and compares it among the private and public accounting sectors.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a theoretical framework that combines the technology–organization–environment model, the innovation diffusion theory model and the technology acceptance model. A convenience sampling method was used to obtain 561 surveys from accounting, finance management, auditing and bookkeeping professionals in public and private organizations in Kuwait. The data were analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling.
Findings
This study demonstrates that all individual and organizational variables significantly affect AI implementation in the accounting industry, as supported by adequate values of path coefficient and a p-value of <0.05, except competitive pressure, which did not reach statistical significance. Multi-group analysis indicates statistical differences between the private and public sectors regarding organizational culture, regulatory support and perceived ease of use in AI implementation.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to compare AI implementation in the private and public accounting sectors. Its findings could redesign the authors’ understanding of AI implementation in the accounting industry.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore how the expansion in cryptocurrency users affects the country's research and development (R&D) investments.
Design/methodology/approach
The analysis covers 53 countries over the period 2019–2022. The empirical methodology implements an instrumental variable approach to overcome endogeneity and omitted variable bias issues. In particular, this study introduces novel instruments developed from Google data, specifically related to trends observed in the cryptocurrency markets.
Findings
The results show that macroeconomic and institutional factors, as well as technology infrastructure affect the country's R&D expenditure, as previously noted in the literature. The country's R&D spending significantly responds to cryptocurrency expansions. Conspicuously, each 10% increase in cryptocurrency market users boosts the ratio of R&D to GDP by 1.35%. The countries that have imposed an adequate taxation policy on cryptocurrency gains experienced more improvement in their R&D budget, in contrast to those that forced aggressive tax brackets or did not apply adequate policies. Cryptocurrency dynamics affect both religiously regulated and nonreligious countries.
Originality/value
This study has three main contributions. First, it introduces the role of the cryptocurrency market as one of the leading global trends to affect the countries’ R&D budget. Second, this paper documents the importance of forcing an adequate tax policy on cryptocurrency capital gains. Third, the results of this paper serve as guidelines for governments to face the challenges raised by the cryptocurrency market.

Abstract
Purpose
The current study examines the relationship between financial literacy and small and the performance of medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the moderating role of financial access.
Design/methodology/approach
The population of this study consists of present SMEs in Kuwait, from whom a sample of 155 businesses was chosen. This study adopted a cross-sectional time frame and analyzed the collected data using partial least square structural equation modeling, and Smart-pls 4 software was applied for calculation.
Findings
This research reveals that financial literacy significantly influences SME performance, consistent with previous studies, showing that higher financial literacy promotes entrepreneurs' financial management capabilities and enhances business outcomes. Also, the study supports that financial access significantly moderates this relationship, pointing out that adequate access to financial services boosts the benefits of financial literacy.
Research limitations/implications
Major implications of this study compromise the urgent need for customized financial literacy programs and policies promoting financial thoroughness, particularly in enhancing economies. The study recognizes limitations such as its cross-sectional design, small sample size and reliance on self-reported measures, suggesting further research use longitudinal approaches, a larger sample and objective measures.
Practical implications
The authors’ recommendations contain comprehensive financial literacy training, development of targeted financial education initiatives, promotion of sound financial management practices and policies to enhance financial access and inclusion, all aimed at boosting SME performance and contributing to economic growth.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is Kuwait’s first of its sort. Thus, the research is even more critical in Kuwait, where social and corporate values differ significantly. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between financial literacy and the performance of Kuwait’s SMEs moderated by financial access.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the nexus between digital financial literacy and customers’ perceived financial behavior within the Kuwaiti context. Moreover, it will further explore how digital financial literacy relates to financial behavior dimensions.
Design/methodology/approach
Data collection was facilitated by creating a questionnaire derived from multiple literature sources. This study used a cross-sectional, time-based dimension. Data was analyzed using the partial least square (PLS) structural equation modeling approach, using the Smart-PLS 4 software for computation.
Findings
Findings demonstrated a significant relationship between digital financial literacy and financial behavior, with a path coefficient of 0.542, a p-value of 0.000 and an R2 value of 0.581. The explorative model revealed substantial relationships between many dimensions of digital financial literacy and various dimensions of financial behavior. More precisely, financial knowledge, awareness and decision-making were the factors that had the most significant impact on financial behavior.
Practical implications
Kuwaiti policymakers should consider including digital financial literacy programs in comprehensive financial education programs to improve public understanding of digital financial instruments and their consequences.
Originality/value
As the authors know, this is the initial endeavor to evaluate the relationship between digital financial literacy, financial behavior and their respective dimensions.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the impact of big data analytics capabilities on export performance. Moreover, it assesses the mediating effect of the supply chain innovation and moderating effect of supply chain agility.
Design/methodology/approach
This study is based on primary data that were collected from the manufacturing sector operating in Jordan. A total of 327 responses were used for the final data analysis. Data analysis was performed via a partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach.
Findings
The results of the data analysis supported a positive relationship between big data analytics capabilities and the export performance as well as a mediating effect of supply chain innovation. It was confirmed that supply chain agility moderated the relationship of supply chain innovation and export performance.
Originality/value
This study developed a theoretical and empirical model to investigate the relationship between big data analytics capabilities, export performance, supply chain innovation and supply chain agility. This study offers new theoretical and managerial contributions that add value to the supply chain management literature by testing the moderated-mediated model of these constructs in the manufacturing sector in Jordan.

Abstract
Purpose
The current work sought to investigate the mediating effect of supply chain ambidexterity on the relationship between Industry 4.0 capabilities and operational performance of manufacturing firms in Jordan.
Design/methodology/approach
Data collection was carried out through a survey with 253 respondents from manufacturing firms in Jordan through the first quarter in 2023. The quantitative approach and structural equation modeling (SEM) were applied to analyze the collected data. Dynamic capabilities view (DCV) theory was the adopted theoretical lens for this work.
Findings
The results demonstrated that Industry 4.0 capabilities positively and significantly affect exploration, exploitation and operational performance. In addition, the results confirmed that exploration and exploitation positively and significantly affect operational performance. Further, it is also found that exploration and exploitation in the supply chain positively and significantly mediate the relationship between Industry 4.0 capabilities and operational performance.
Originality/value
This study focuses on this gap to deepen the understanding of operational performance in a recent manufacturing environment under various factors and perspectives (Industry 4.0 capabilities and supply chain ambidexterity).

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of using some polymers at different concentrations in the consolidation of vegetable-tanned leather artifacts.
Design/methodology/approach
New vegetable-tanned leather samples were prepared. The consolidants used were polyacrylamide (PAM) and polymethyl methacrylate/hydroxyethyl methacrylate (MMA-HEMA). Accelerated heat aging was applied to the untreated and treated samples. Analytical techniques used were Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), digital microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), change of color and mechanical properties.
Findings
The characteristic FTIR bands showed the effect of accelerated heat aging on the molecular structure of the studied samples, but treated and aged treated samples used were better than aged untreated samples. Microscopic investigations (digital and SEM), and mechanical properties proved that 2% was the best concentration for polymers used. The change in the total color difference of the treated and aged treated samples was limited.
Originality/value
This study presents the important results obtained from PAM and poly(MMA-HEMA) used for the consolidation of vegetable-tanned leather artifacts. The best results of the studied polymers can be applied directly to protect historical vegetable-tanned leathers.
