Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to address the challenge of inefficient decision-making in site layout planning and resource allocation for construction projects. Existing approaches often rely on mathematical models that produce unrealistic results or encounter limitations confined to the site itself. To overcome these constraints, this study proposes a simulation-based approach with a focus on automatically optimizing tower crane placement, depot locations, and supplier selection. The primary objective is to minimize project costs while enhancing overall efficiency and productivity.

Design/methodology/approach

The implementation integrates a genetic algorithm and a discrete event simulation model featuring a central control kernel. Key considerations include project boundaries, site layout features, depot locations, and manufacturing and transportation capabilities. The simulation process assesses each solution, encompassing critical stages like manufacturing, transfer to depot, site transportation, and installation. The proposed approach is tested using an actual steel structure project in Tehran, Iran.

Findings

Results demonstrate substantial cost reductions compared to the contractor plan, showcasing the superiority of the proposed simulation-based optimization approach. The findings underscore the practical applicability of the research, providing valuable insights for industry professionals to make informed decisions and enhance project outcomes in real-world construction projects.

Originality/value

This integrated simulation-based optimization approach offers a robust framework for realistic and effective site layout planning and resource allocation in general steel construction projects. Its general simulation mechanism allows for easy expansion and application to similar projects, capable of assessing a large number of alternatives. The research contributes to the field by presenting a novel and effective method for addressing decision-making challenges in construction project planning and resource allocation.

Abstract

Purpose

Following counterarguments from previous studies, overwhelming evidence from meta-analyses shows that supply-chain integration (SCI) is not universally associated with improved performance. This study aims to clarify all the mechanisms purported to reach the combined effects of SCI dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors first conducted a literature review and identified the effects of different individual SCI dimensions and their interactions and mediation, or arcs of integration, as reported by past studies. Data from a survey of 348 firms were analyzed using multiple regressions, structural equation modeling and latent class analysis.

Findings

The results showed that the positive independent associations between SCI dimensions and operational performance change as they interact. Larger combinational effects were found in a second-order SCI construct and a mediation model. Smaller effects and fewer significant paths (and even negative signs) were also found. This shows that more SCI is not always better. Finally, configurational effects varied: the latent class analysis showed that a more inward (internal integration) gestalt performed better for some firms.

Research limitations/implications

Some variables that could affect operations performance were missing from the models, and this paper did not specify the directions of relationships among the five performance dimensions. The authors are aware of cumulative models, but they are not within the scope of this paper. In addition, this study did not consider other sociocultural factors that may influence different dimensions of SCI.

Originality/value

This study shows SCI dimensions play different roles. Therefore, it is needed to theorize the distinct roles of internal and external integration and how they somehow compensate or substitute for each other. The results suggest that future studies need to reexamine the universal predictions especially from resource-based, resource-advantage and relational views. SCIs are not inimitable and rare resources for all firms. Furthermore, implementing SCI does not guarantee resource and relational advantages for all firms.

Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the influence of transformational leadership on job satisfaction in Jordanian commercial banks through knowledge sharing as a mediator. The data were collected from 232 employees and then analyzed through regression analysis using SPSS. The results revealed that there is a significant influence of transformational leadership on job satisfaction, as well as a significant influence of knowledge sharing on this relationship. These findings imply that if managers adopt transformational leadership, their subordinates can be satisfied with their jobs, specifically if they facilitate knowledge sharing. This study sheds light on improving organizational performance and employee engagement in a specific context and provides excellent direction for future contributions.

Abstract

Investments in faculty development have been shown to lead to robust improvements in research innovation, faculty quality of life, and discussion and dialogue across disciplines. Traditional faculty development usually takes a university-centered approach, focusing on one-size-fits-all and large-group structures such as webinars and workshops. This chapter suggests that attending to faculty wellbeing might be improved through a coaching program for individual faculty that meets the needs of faculty where they are and helps them to make progress in their work, including tailoring supports to specific university cultures as well as creating a space for encouraging cohort coaching in order to provide support across faculty. This chapter introduces processes needed for the development of one’s academic identity – agency, belonging, and competencies (ABC). This ABC framework is derived from empirical research examining the developmental processes of becoming a change agent and serves as the foundation for achieving wellbeing and fulfillment for a faculty member.

Abstract

Purpose

Job performance literature has evolved to address the aspects of performance thinking where knowledge sharing (KS) and emotions on the job are considered important. This study evaluates the influence of emotional intelligence (EI), mediated through KS, on job outcomes measured as job performance (JP) and job satisfaction (JS).

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling methods are used to investigate the degree of influence of EI on job outcomes through KS. The data for analysis has been collected from 227 project managers at Information Technology-Information Technology Enabled Services (IT-ITeS) firms.

Findings

The findings suggest that the EI has a positive and significant effect on KS. This implies that employees with high EI scores are more involved in the KS behavior. Furthermore, the findings suggest that KS partially mediates the relationship between EI and JP, and it fully mediates the relationship between EI and JS.

Research limitations/implications

For KS, the answer lies in the recruitment and retention of emotionally intelligent persons rather than investing only in information technology. The study enhances the literature on knowledge management, sharing and EI.

Practical implications

The proposed research model suggests a successful infusion of KS within IT-ITeS firms. Knowing the EI of employees and, accordingly, changing their behavior towards sharing knowledge is probably a distinctive, most efficacious and essential strategy for augmenting job outcomes.

Originality/value

The study establishes the role of KS in translating the impact of EI on JP and JS. Furthermore, it contributes a novel framework of KS behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to empirically test the direct effects of three types of information technology (IT) use on three dimensions of supply chain coordination (SCC). It further explores the spillover effects of IT use on coordination beyond its domain across the SC. Besides, this study probes into the moderating effects of environmental uncertainty (EU).

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modelling (SEM) is used to examine data collected from 202 firms in Hong Kong. Furthermore, multi-group SEM analysis with a series of invariance tests was used to test the moderating effects of EU.

Findings

Internal, supplier and customer IT use have direct effects on internal, supplier and customer coordination, respectively. Besides, IT use generates forward spillover effects beyond its domain along the forward physical flow in an SC. EU positively moderates the relationships between external IT use and SCC but does not shape the effectiveness of internal IT use in enhancing SCC. Moreover, under a high EU, the spillover effects of IT use on coordination can be intensified. Besides, the spillover effects further expand to benefit coordination on a larger scale of the SC under a high EU.

Originality/value

This study contributes by revealing that in addition to direct effects, IT use in a specific domain could generate spillover effects on coordination beyond its domain throughout an SC. More importantly, it contributes by explaining the difference in the effectiveness of IT use under different levels of EU using multi-group SEM analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to develop an efficient thermal management system, which effectively dissipate the heat generated from the electronic devices. The present paper focuses at the modeling of microchannel heat sinks (MCHSs) with phase change materials (PCMs) insets to deal with the fluctuating heat generated from the electronic components.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a novel approach is introduced to enhance the thermal performance of MCHSs through the integration of conjugate heat transfer and energy storage. Numerical investigations were conducted on six novel models of PCM-based hybrid MCHSs using ANSYS-FLUENT. The hydrothermal characteristics of six PCM-based hybrid MCHS models were analyzed and compared with an MCHS model without PCM.

Findings

The numerical model used for this study exhibited a good agreement with existing experimental and simulation results documented in the literature. The hybrid MCHS models developed in the present analysis showed superior thermal characteristics compared to MCHS without PCM. About 12% improvement in the thermal performance factor and a 7.3% reduction in thermal resistance were observed in the proposed MCHS models. A negligible influence of the PCM channel shape and aspect ratio (AR) was observed on the MCHS performance.

Research limitations/implications

As the present work is a numerical investigation, the computational time and computational cost requirements are the main implication for the research.

Practical implications

High pumping power requirement and expensive manufacturing methods of the microfluidic devices are the main practical implications. Leakage problem is also a challenge for development of these heat sinks.

Originality/value

The surge in the heat generated by electronic components is a limiting factor for the conventional MCHSs. To accommodate the surge, researchers have explored energy storage methods using PCM-based passive MCHS but these are effective only during the phase change process. To address this limitation, novel PCM-based hybrid MCHSs, which combine convective heat transfer with energy storage capabilities, have been modeled in the present work. There is an ample opportunity for further exploration of hybrid MCHSs with PCM.

Abstract

Purpose

With the rapid development of social media, many organizations have begun to attach importance to social media platforms. This research studies the management and the use of social media in academic music libraries, taking the Center for Chinese Music Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CCMS) as a case study.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a sentiment analysis of posts on Facebook’s public page to analyze the reaction to the posts with some exploratory analysis, including the communication trend and relevant factors that affect user interaction.

Findings

Our results show that the Facebook channel for the library has a good publicity effect and active interaction, but the number of posts and interactions has a downward trend. Therefore, the library needs to pay more attention to the management of the Facebook channel and take adequate measures to improve the quality of posts to increase interaction.

Originality/value

Few studies have analyzed existing data directly collected from social media by programming based on sentiment analysis and natural language processing technology to explore potential methods to promote music libraries, especially in East Asia, and about traditional music.

Abstract

This paper introduces the concept of a “computable economy” and discusses how it relates to the emergence of Web3 or the new type of economy that has arisen from the integration of digital technologies such as blockchain, smart contracts, and digital identity. A “computable economy” is one where those computational rule systems are integrated into a connected graph, allowing for decentralized cooperation and distributed coordination. This paper traces the trajectory of innovation in the economy from the development of industrial production technologies to the rise of information and communication technology (ICT) and the digital economy. It argues that the shift to a “computable economy” is a consequence of the transformation of analog economic institutions into natively digital institutions. This results in a “full stack” digital economy where all economic actions can be digitally constructed and implemented. This paper concludes by discussing the potential of Web3 to create a new type of economy, that is, “techno-utopian” and characterized by human flourishing, as the incursion of machines and computation leads to a new era of economic growth and transformation.
