Abstract

The first article of this series referred to the problems and difficulties peculiar to aircraft lubrication because of the wide temperature range to which aircraft lubricants are subjected. An engine lubricant works only for a very short time at sub‐zero temperatures, and spends most of its working life at around 100°C. (212°F.). The converse is true of most airframe lubricants—they spend much of their working life at very low temperatures and only occasionally reach the higher levels. Continuous efficient lubrication at very low temperatures must therefore be provided.

The last few years have seen the gas turbine applied in various forms as an aircraft power plant, and it is fair to say that its introduction has resulted in a revolution in aircraft engine lubrication requirements.

Abstract

OF recent weeks public attention has bean drawn to oil dilution as a means of improving aircraft engine starting at low temperatures, and the following notes on the early history of oil dilution, details of a typical system and the effect of dilution on engine operation may be of some interest. The writer would, however, emphasise that he has no first hand experience of the difficulties which recently faced B.O.A.C., and these notes must therefore not be regarded in any way as related to that particular Airline's experience.

Abstract

The design and construction of a successful modern aircraft makes the highest demands on engineering techniques, demands which are not equaled in any other field. An aircraft flies only because it is refined in design and manufactured to the limit of its builder's knowledge and its usefulness as a means of transportation direct proportion to the builder's skill in weight reduction and in the extraction of the maximum possible power per pound of power unit weight.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a retrospection on the importance, origins and development of the research programs in the author’s career.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses an autobiographical approach.

Findings

Most of the articles, research monographs and books that constitute this research and publishing efforts can be categorized into seven distinct, but related, research programs: channels of distribution; marketing theory; marketing’s philosophy debates; macromarketing and ethics; relationship marketing; resource-advantage theory; and marketing management and strategy. The value system that has guided these research programs has been shaped by specific events that took place in the author’s formative years. This essay chronicles these events and the origins and development of the seven research programs.

Originality/value

Chronicling the importance, origins and development of the seven research programs will hopefully motivate and assist other scholars in developing their own research programs.

Abstract

Aristotle's Politics provides an example of what a biopolitical science might look like. Three key elements stand out: (1) an account of political structure as a multilevel society including kin and non-kin relationships; (2) an account of the human species that includes comparison with other social species that are capable of coordinated action; and (3) an emphasis on the human capacity to understand and communicate moral rules. Over the last 50 years, a number of research programs in evolutionary anthropology have provided the basis for a biopolitical science that maps onto the elements above. Schultz, Opie, and Atkinson describe the trajectory of human evolution from solitary to a pair bonded, familial species. Michael Tomasello's two-step account of the evolution of human cooperation shows how the ancestral humans went from merely gregarious to genuinely political animals. Christopher Boehm shows how the human capacity for moral emotions and decision making by consensus developed. Richard Wrangham provides evidence that the suppression of reactive aggression by ancestral human societies resulted in a self-domesticated species, a process that enhanced the human capacity for cooperation and communication. Bernard Chapais argued that the emergence of pair bonding among ancestral humans laid the foundation for both consanguineal and affinal kinship structures. That these bodies of research hold together can best be seen when they are viewed in light of Aristotle's biopolitical science.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the impact of an established market orientation on the implementation of green supply chain practices and environmental performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from 225 manufacturing managers are analyzed using a partial least squares structural equation modeling methodology.

Findings

Findings indicate that market orientation both directly and indirectly (through green supply chain management practices) impacts environmental performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study focuses on the impact of a market orientation on environmental sustainability within the manufacturing sector, thereby limiting generalization to other sectors.

Practical implications

Manufacturing practitioners are provided with information emphasizing the importance of implementing and maintaining a strong market orientation as a precursor to establishing an environmental sustainability strategy.

Social implications

The results have important societal implications, in that a marketing approach that leads to the more rapid adoption of environmental sustainability programs within the manufacturing sector is identified.

Originality/value

This is believed to be the first empirical investigation of the relationship between market orientation and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

President Bill Clinton has had many opponents and enemies, most of whom come from the political right wing. Clinton supporters contend that these opponents, throughout the Clinton presidency, systematically have sought to undermine this president with the goal of bringing down his presidency and running him out of office; and that they have sought non‐electoral means to remove him from office, including Travelgate, the death of Deputy White House Counsel Vincent Foster, the Filegate controversy, and the Monica Lewinsky matter. This bibliography identifies these and other means by presenting citations about these individuals and organizations that have opposed Clinton. The bibliography is divided into five sections: General; “The conspiracy stream of conspiracy commerce”, a White House‐produced “report” presenting its view of a right‐wing conspiracy against the Clinton presidency; Funding; Conservative organizations; and Publishing/media. Many of the annotations note the links among these key players.
