Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to enhance the predictability of stock returns. Existing studies have used investor sentiment to forecast stock returns. However, it is unclear whether high-frequency intraday investor sentiment can enhance the forecasting performance of low-frequency stock returns.
Design/methodology/approach
Thus, we employ the MIDAS model and the high-frequency intraday sentiment extracted from the Internet stock forum to forecast Chinese A-shares returns at daily frequency.
Findings
The results illustrate that high-frequency sentiment data are better than daily sentiment data in predicting daily stock returns, and the sentiment in non-trading hours has been proved superior to those in trading hours.
Originality/value
First, our study adds to the growing literature on investor sentiment. We are the first to construct a proxy for high-frequency investor sentiment using intraday postings collected from Chinese Internet stock forum. Second, we confirm that sentiment in non-trading hours has a stronger predictive ability than those in trading hours. Third, we also contribute to the performance comparison of MIDAS-class models. The good performance of U-MIDAS is confirmed in our empirical applications.

Abstract
Purpose
Sustainable financial practices are integral to achieving the United Nation’s development goals that necessitates the collaborative efforts of both corporate and investors. This study focuses on investors’ pro-environmental personal norms (PN) along with hedonic values on socially responsible investment (SRI) intentions, which could help in understanding investors’ responsiveness to corporate Environmental, Social and Governance efforts.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample for this study included 415 responses from young millennial investors, using a cross-sectional research design. A two-step structural equation model was used to analyze construct reliability and validity and to test the hypotheses and overall model predictability. The mediating role of ascribed responsibility (AR) between the awareness of consequence (AOC) and PNs was investigated.
Findings
These results indicate that AOC and AR substantially affect PNs. PNs based on AOC and AR was found to be significant but scored lower than hedonic considerations for SRI. In addition, the relationship between AOC and PNs exhibited a full mediation effect on AR.
Practical implications
These findings suggest that investors are environmentally conscious when aware of the repercussions of their actions. They feel accountable, even when making financial choices. Fund managers might include more environmentally responsible companies in their portfolios and the government could offer tax incentives to attract investors. The active economic participation of an increasing number of pro-environmental investors can improve the macroeconomic climate.
Originality/value
This is the first study to use the norm activation model for pro-environmental behavior in a financial setting. Most previous studies have focused on social norms to showcase individuals’ obligation and responsibility for a good cause. However, this study demonstrates the importance of personal moral obligation in shaping societal norms. Hedonism is a new dimension in the context of responsible investment.

Abstract
Purpose
It is a complex and dynamic process to provide high-quality rural infrastructure. However, there lacks a holistic performance evaluation method for rural infrastructure provision that reflects changing rural social needs and takes a village as a whole. This study aims to develop a holistic and dynamic performance evaluation model for rural infrastructure in Mainland China.
Design/methodology/approach
This study established an evaluation index system by combining the lifecycle theory and the economy, efficiency, effectiveness and equity (4E) theory. This study developed an evaluation model by using the analytic network process (ANP) and matter-element analysis theory (MEAT). The model was validated by two representative villages in Mainland China.
Findings
The developed model can reflect dynamic social needs and effectively evaluate the overall infrastructure provision performance of a village. The weight of indicators reflects the changes in Mainland China’s contemporary rural social needs, with particular emphasis on the impact and output performance. The evaluation result shows that the overall performance of the representative villages was excellent but had a tendency toward good. Although the output performance was excellent, different input, process and impact performances resulted in different downgrade trends.
Originality/value
This study provides a theoretical basis for disaggregating the complex issue of the performance of rural infrastructure provision. The results can be used by relevant authorities to make a holistic and dynamic evaluation of the performance of rural infrastructure provision and timely revise planning and management policies.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore what and how digital innovation, as a knowledge-based and multi-dimensional process, can be used to increase the accountability of public and private sector organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
Taking an interpretivist approach, qualitative research is designed around Strong Structuration Theory (SST). A content analysis of relevant documents and semi-structured interviews focusing on the relationships between digital innovation and accountability in extraordinary times is conducted.
Findings
The results show the existence of digital innovation barriers and facilitators that can have an impact on accountability during extraordinary times. The research highlights how managers of public organizations focus largely on the social dimension of knowledge (i.e., competencies shaped by collective culture), while managers of private organizations focus mainly on the human dimension of knowledge (i.e., skills gained through learning by doing).
Research limitations/implications
The paper enriches the accountability literature by historicizing SST for extraordinary times and by utilizing a multiple-dimensional approach to digital innovation. Also, the work underlines specific strategies organizations could usefully adopt to improve accountability through digital innovation in the public and private sectors during extraordinary times.
Originality/value
This article emphasizes the crucial integration of technological components with knowledge. In particular, the digital innovation is considered as a strong synergy of human and social dimensions that compels organizations toward enhanced accountability, particularly in the face of extraordinary challenges.

Purpose
Construction activities are anticipated to experience steady growth worldwide, resulting in massive construction and demolition waste (CDW). Despite introducing five designing out waste (DoW) principles to combat CDW from the early design stage, the design process remains a notable contributor to CDW generation due to designers’ limited knowledge and experience. The decision-making process in identifying and selecting DoW solutions is relatively underexplored in the current literature. This study aims to bridge this gap by reviewing existing literature to investigate the implementation of DoW principles and uncover potential areas to support designers in selecting DoW solutions for their projects.
Design/methodology/approach
Following the Preferred Reporting Item for systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) protocol, a systematic literature review is adopted to analyse 50 selected articles published from 2000 to 2023 in order to develop the conceptual framework, which was subsequently reviewed by industry experts.
Findings
This review critically examines the current state of DoW implementation, the decision-making criteria for selecting DoW solutions and the available tools for DoW implementation. Existing limitations and future research directions to aid DoW in decision-making were identified. Drawing from the review’s findings, a conceptual framework is formulated to develop a decision support tool for selecting DoW alternatives.
Originality/value
The outcome of this review offers researchers insight into identifying existing gaps and potential areas to aid the DoW decision-making process. Construction professionals can use the findings to develop a decision support tool for selecting DoW alternatives, thereby minimising waste generation in construction projects.

Abstract
Purpose
Evaluating project success within the construction industry presents challenges due to the unique characteristics of the sector, the complexity of projects, and the involvement of diverse stakeholders. Conducting a bibliometric analysis, this paper aims to unravel the major research themes and methodologies utilised by researchers in studying the critical success criteria for construction projects, as well as extracting these success criteria.
Design/methodology/approach
The researchers systematically searched and screened 95 papers from Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases. This study conducted research focus parallelship network (RFPN) analysis and keywords co-occurrence network (KCON) analysis using BibExcel and Gephi to cluster the papers, illuminate the relationships among keywords within each cluster, and identify the primary research directions.
Findings
Using the RFPN analysis, this study classified the papers into three distinct clusters: infrastructure and public projects success, risk and knowledge management, and contractors and procurement management. Statistical techniques such as structural equation modelling (SEM) and multi-criteria decision-making methods such as analytic hierarchy process (AHP) have been used to analyse project success in the construction industry.
Research limitations/implications
Considering the intensified demand for streamlined digital interactions and the increasing emphasis on sustainability and safety performance, construction companies are recommended to allocate greater investments toward the automation and digitisation of their products and processes. Prioritising modular construction and embracing transformative technologies alongside data science is crucial for enabling well-informed decision-making, and enhancing project success.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by conducting a quantitative and systematic evaluation of the literature on project success criteria in the construction industry and uncovering key research areas. It addresses the pressing need to understand the complexities of construction projects amidst evolving industry dynamics and emerging disruptions. Moreover, by highlighting the implications of digital innovations and modular construction, this study urges deeper exploration into their impact on project performance and stakeholder satisfaction. This research sets a comprehensive framework for investigating the interplay between project complexity, technological advancements, and sustainable practices in the construction sector, paving the way for strategic advancements in the field.

Hybrid learning has become a reality due to the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students world over had to switch to this new learning format. This study aims to analyze the impact of innovation attributes of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and User Technology (UTAUT2) model and community of inquiry (COI) framework on the hybrid learning experience and the continued intention for it.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a cross-sectional research design, the study has adapted a scale from past studies and collected data using purposive sampling from the student community. The research has used the structural equation modeling technique using SMART-PLS to study the hypothesized relationships.
Findings
The study’s findings are that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, teaching presence, cognitive presence and social presence influence hybrid learning experience and continued intention. Further hybrid learning experience mediates the continued intention.
Practical implications
This study has several academic and practical implications for improving the hybrid learning experience. Various stakeholders can get insights on improving the user’s desire to pursue learning in a hybrid environment.
Originality/value
Hybrid learner experience is an upcoming area of research and yet unexplored in India as well as in other countries. A new hybrid experience model was developed by extending the UTAUT2 to include the COI framework and learner experience frameworks.

Purpose
This study explores the potential impact of enterprise social media (ESM) communication visibility on knowledge sabotage to reduce knowledge sabotage within organizations.
Design/methodology/approach
We collected data from 389 Chinese employees across three stages and used hierarchical regression analysis and the bootstrap method to test our hypotheses.
Findings
Communication visibility negatively affects knowledge sabotage, and the loss of knowledge power mediates the relationship between communication visibility and knowledge sabotage. Digital work connectivity strengthens the negative relationship between message transparency and loss of knowledge power but weakens the negative relationship between network translucence and loss of knowledge power. Therefore, digital work connectivity plays a dual role.
Practical implications
Managers can encourage employees to share their knowledge advantages through ESM and seek cross-disciplinary knowledge cooperation, which helps restrain knowledge sabotage from the source. At the same time, maintaining appropriate digital work connectivity enables employees to leverage their knowledge interaction advantages of ESM, thereby fostering their knowledge competitiveness.
Originality/value
This study is the first to reveal the internal mechanism (loss of knowledge power) through which ESM communication visibility affects knowledge sabotage and explores the boundary condition (digital work connectivity) impacting the effectiveness of communication visibility. It contributes to a deeper understanding of the inherent nature of knowledge sabotage from an information technology perspective and offers novel technical insights into its management.

Purpose
This study analyzes the reasons for satisfaction or dissatisfaction among people with public health mitigation policies, particularly with focus on human values. Recent studies reveal that the citizenry of various nations reacted to government policy measures differently when asked if they are satisfied with government handling of COVID-19. Human values such as openness-to-change and conservation might influence the acceptance of pandemic mitigation measures.
Design/methodology/approach
A structural equation model (SEM) is proposed, which incorporates mitigation strategies and human value variables. National health survey data of the COVID-19 pandemic in Great Britain and Italy is used to test several hypotheses.
Findings
The model analysis suggests that prioritizing public health, monitoring and tracking people, border closures and restricting people’s movement played important roles in the satisfaction of government handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals with a high conservation value are more likely to have a higher probability of dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of COVID-19 pandemic. During a pandemic, the citizens are more willing to trade a good economy for public health. They are also more willing to sacrifice privacy in the government’s efforts to track the spread.
Originality/value
This is a unique study which combines human value variables and mitigation policies in determining acceptance of government policies among citizenry during national health crisis. A SEM modeling framework is presented to analyze empirically several hypotheses.

Purpose
As workplaces increasingly integrate digital technologies, understanding their impact on employee burnout has become imperative. This paper introduces the Technological Work Burnout Scale (TWBS), an innovative tool developed to measure the influence of technology on workplace burnout.
Design/methodology/approach
To bridge the existing gap in this area of study, our research employed Hinkin’s (1998) psychometric methodologies, creating a structured process for developing the TWBS, which included initial item generation, item reduction with reliability estimation, confirmatory factor analysis and tests for both convergent and discriminant validity. By applying these procedures, we validated the scale across various professional settings (in three different samples), ensuring its robustness and applicability in diverse technological work environments.
Findings
The TWBS demonstrates a consistent unidimensional structure, effectively capturing the multifaceted nature of burnout in the digital age.
Originality/value
Through this scale, we provide insights into how technology influences employee well-being and organizational health, offering a valuable tool for organizations to assess and manage the growing issue of technological work burnout. Our study not only enriches the academic understanding of burnout in the context of technological integration in workplaces but also offers practical implications for addressing this critical concern.
