Abstract
Purpose
The field of spirituality is undergoing a transition from an advocacy-based approach to one that is grounded in scientific evidence. The advantages of workplace spirituality for employee performance remain under-researched, however, particularly in the context of service roles. This study addresses this gap by examining the mediating role of workplace spirituality between social exchange, organizational trust and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB).
Design/methodology/approach
A two-wave online survey was conducted, with 350 participating Israeli service employees. Structural equation modeling was utilized to test the hypotheses.
Findings
Empirically testing workplace spirituality and OCB by their dimensions advances the field, exposes unique rather than general relationships. Workplace spirituality’s latent factors were found as mediators: alignment with organizational values mediated the relationship between social exchange, organizational trust and OCBs directed toward individuals (OCBI), whereas meaningful work mediated the relationship between social exchange, organizational trust and citizenship behaviors directed toward the organization (OCBO).
Practical implications
It would be advisable to give direct attention to strategies and programs that foster workplace spirituality and OCB among employees by HRM and service department managers.
Originality/value
The current study is the first of its kind to address workplace spirituality as a mediator between social exchange, organizational trust and OCB. The findings serve as a springboard for integrating workplace spirituality into employee performance research.

Abstract
Purpose
The severity of global competition and vast hostile challenges is compelling the information and communications technology (ICT) industry to focus on internal organizational factors to excel in performance. This study investigates the influence of shared responsibility, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality on employees’ performance through work engagement. In addition, the moderating influence of work orientation on the relationships between shared responsibility, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality with employee performance was also investigated.
Design/methodology/approach
Time-lagged and multisource data were acquired from 267 followers and their 69 immediate supervisors/managers of ICT firms. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the data.
Findings
The findings reveal that the impact of shared responsibilities, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality on performance (e.g. extra-role and in-role) is mediated by work engagement. Additionally, the positive association of perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality with work engagement is more pronounced when work orientation is high, indicating a positive moderation of work orientation.
Originality/value
This is among the initial studies that examine the impact of shared responsibility, perceived identifiability and workplace spirituality on overall employee performance through work engagement. The moderation of work orientation in these proposed relationships has not been previously examined. This study suggests novel theoretical and managerial implications for the ICT industry based on the results.

Abstract
Purpose
In the knowledge management (KM) literature, there are umpteen discussions on knowledge sharing; however, the scholarly community still faces a dearth of literature on knowledge hiding behavior (KHB) and its determinants. The current study aims to examine the direct effect of dark triad (DT) personality dimensions (machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy) on KHB dimensions (rationalized hiding, evasive hiding and playing dumb). Drawing on social control theory, this study also explores the moderating effect of workplace spirituality (WS) on the direct relationship between DT and KHB.
Design/methodology/approach
Using purposive sampling, 281 matched-pair datasets from faculty members working with higher education institutions (HEI) in India have been obtained. The direct relationship has been tested through regression analysis and moderation analysis has been performed using the PROCESS macro for SPSS.
Findings
The study has successfully mapped DT dimensions with KHB dimensions, and it is observed that machiavellians mostly use evasive hiding, narcissists believe in rationalized hiding and paying dumb is mostly used by psychopaths. Workplace spirituality (WS) weakens the direct relationship between DT and KHB.
Practical implications
HEIs are advised to foster a climate conducive to WS by getting faculty to realize that their job is something larger than themselves through developing a sense of community among faculty members.
Originality/value
This empirical study extends the KM literature and expands the scope of bridging the gaps on KHB. It is one of the few studies to examine the impact of DT on KHB with WS as a moderator in HEIs.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to present a sustainability framework that advances the conceptual understanding of the role of spirituality in the context of social entrepreneurship.
Design/methodology/approach
Through a systematic literature review of spirituality at both the individual and organisational levels, the triple bottom line framework of sustainability, and business ethics, this study offers a sustainability framework for social entrepreneurship. It explains how spirituality at these levels influences various dimensions of social entrepreneurship and helps achieve social, economic, environmental and ethical outcomes.
Findings
The study proposed that individuals with spiritual practices are more likely to engage in entrepreneurial, social, ethical and environmental orientations, while organisations with spiritual practices are more likely to engage in employee, market and ethical orientations. Spiritual capability can serve as a strategic advantage and contribute to the sustainable development of social enterprises.
Originality/value
This study makes three significant contributions. First, it presents an emergent framework for integrating spirituality (at both individual and organisational levels) and sustainability within the social entrepreneurship literature, offering implications for both social entrepreneurs and social enterprises. Second, this study proposes incorporating ethics as the fourth dimension of sustainability and argues that spirituality can act as a catalyst for achieving sustainability in social entrepreneurship. Third, this study identifies seven critical dimensions of social entrepreneurship: spiritual capabilities, entrepreneurial orientation, social orientation, environmental orientation, market orientation, ethical orientation and employee orientation, all of which contribute to ethical and sustainable development.

Abstract
Purpose
The extensive use of digital payment methods has made financial ecosystems more open and effective. As technology develops, the future of commerce is significantly shaped by digital payments and e-wallets. This study aimed to examine the influencing factors on the intention to continue use (ICU) of e-wallets.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample of 246 respondents was employed in the data analysis using Smart-PLS 4. Data were collected from e-wallet users using convenience sampling from India. Online survey was conducted for data collection.
Findings
This study found that consumers’ intention to continue use of e-wallets is positively influenced by perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and rewards. Also, perceived usefulness (PU) shows a significant partial mediating role between perceived ease of use (PEOU), rewards (RW) and ICU. However, it shows a fully mediating role between perceived enjoyment (PEJ) and intention to continue use (ICU).
Originality/value
E-wallet providers should emphasize to provide easy to use e-wallet applications but with rewards. This study added knowledge to the existing literature focusing on the influence of perceived ease of use and rewards on intention to continue use of e-wallets through perceived usefulness, which was not previously tested empirically.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the impact of Chinese senior leaders’ diplomatic visits on outward and inward foreign direct investment (OFDI and IFDI, respectively). Additionally, it aims to discern the differential impacts of diplomatic visits on FDI across different Chinese administrations.
Design/methodology/approach
We utilize data about the diplomatic visits of Chinese senior leaders to 146 host countries. The dataset was divided into two leadership eras: the tenure of President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao from 2003 to 2012 and the period from 2013 to 2021 under President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang. We employ generalized least squares, lagged effect, and two-stage least squares methods to estimate the econometric model. This analytical framework assesses the influence of high-level diplomatic visits on FDI flows, addressing potential time-serial and endogeneity concerns.
Findings
The findings reveal that senior leaders’ diplomatic visits significantly boost Chinese OFDI. The effect on IFDI in China is not statistically significant. The administrations of Hu and Xi played positive roles in promoting OFDI. However, only Hu’s administration showed a statistically significant positive relationship with IFDI. The result suggests a potential increase in IFDI between China and host countries within two to three years following diplomatic visits.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the understanding of how Chinese senior leaders’ diplomatic activities affect foreign direct investment. It provides a deeper understanding of Chinese senior leaders’ diplomatic efforts to compensate for investment across two administration periods. It offers insights into the potential influence of diplomatic efforts on FDI, enriching the understanding of diplomacy’s role in international business contexts.

Design/methodology/approach
This paper does a detailed evaluation of chronologically evolved existing main workplace spirituality concept specifications to point out their inadequacies and outlines a resolution to address the inadequacies.
Findings
This paper reveals that there are differences, inconsistencies, and inadequate clarity in workplace spirituality concept specifications and that these have had adverse implications. This paper yields a proposed resolution with its associated merits.
Research implications
This paper can potentially improve the future workplace spirituality research as reflected in its six theoretical implications and three directions for future research.
Practical implications
This paper’s description of the inadequacies in the existing workplace spirituality concept specifications and the proposed resolution can improve the practice of workplace spirituality research.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the effects of organizational spirituality, leadership styles and organizational trust on employee well-being as explained by work engagement and job burnout. Specifically, the study aims to examine the moderating role of organizational trust on the relationships between these variables.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses a quantitative approach and utilizes a survey for data collection involving 783 employees from Kosovo. Data analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM).
Findings
The research results show that organizational spirituality positively affects work engagement and negatively affects job burnout. Furthermore, both transformational and transactional leadership styles show a positive association with work engagement, while only transactional leadership is significantly associated with job burnout. The SEM results underscore that organizational trust does not moderate the relationship between organizational spirituality and employee engagement or job burnout. Organizational trust does, however, moderate the relationships between transformational and transactional leadership styles and both work engagement and job burnout.
Research limitations/implications
This study has several limitations, including the non-random sampling method and the cross-sectional nature of the study. In light of the findings, the implications of the study are discussed and recommendations for future studies are provided.
Originality/value
This study is an enrichment to the existing literature as it explores the subtle role of organizational trust as a moderator in the aforementioned relationships. It highlights the significant influence of organizational spirituality and leadership styles on work engagement and job burnout and provides new insights for researchers and practitioners alike.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to depict how entrepreneurs improve community vitality in the economic, social and environmental dimensions. The paper joins the conversation of business spirituality as the study participants were Sri Lankan Buddhist entrepreneurs from the emerging venture context (i.e. from enterprises which are less than 1–10 years old). The aim of the paper is to introduce spiritually informed entrepreneurial actions, thus contributing to a better understanding of entrepreneurial impact on communities.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper involves a qualitative, interpretivist research design. Data was collected by conducting 28 semi-structured interviews with 18 Sri Lankan Buddhist entrepreneurs. Research participants were selected from diverse business sectors. The research applied inductive thematic analysis for structuring and interpreting data.
Findings
For Sri Lankan Buddhist entrepreneurs, improving community vitality is an essential altruistic goal of their business agenda. During the operations of their ventures, this altruistic goal is translated into altruistic actions that improve the economic, social and environmental vitalities of communities. Research findings highlight that in the case of Sri Lankan Buddhist entrepreneurs, altruistic actions are informed by compassion, which is a fundamental value in the Buddhist religion. Drawing on the findings, an integrated model of community vitality, which describes the role of compassion and the mechanisms of entrepreneurial actions in a Buddhist setting was developed inductively.
Originality/value
Studying entrepreneurial actions to focus on the motivations behind improving community vitality is a new research topic. The paper provides valuable knowledge on business spirituality regarding the compassionate motivations of Buddhist entrepreneurs. The integrated model of community vitality, which describes the mechanisms of entrepreneurial actions to improve community vitality in a Buddhist setting could be an essential compass not only to entrepreneurs but also research scholars in the field of business spirituality.

Abstract
Purpose
Small farmers in India are collectivized and legalized as Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) to progress in agri-food value chains as small agribusiness enterprises. FPCs are dependent on timely information for their sustainability and profitability. Mobile apps are a cost-effective form of information and communication technology. Hence, the purpose of this study is to explore the major determinants of mobile apps adoption by FPCs.
Design/methodology/approach
Quantitative and qualitative data are collected by administering a semi-structured questionnaire and conducting in-depth interviews with board members of 115 FPCs, with a total membership of 30,405 farmers operating in 14 districts of the state of Kerala, India. The logit model is used for quantitative analysis, while dialog mapping is used for qualitative analysis, based on an integrated technology acceptance model and technology organization environment framework.
Findings
Logistic regression results evidence that amongst FPC characteristics, while company size and age are significantly impacting apps adoption, there is no significant association between board size, education level, multiple commodities business or export intention of companies on apps adoption. Digital literacy and technical hands-on training for FPC board members are quintessential to facilitate mobile apps adoption.
Practical implications
The findings are pertinent to policymakers to earmark funds for technical handholding and digital upskilling of FPCs. The need for developing comprehensive, location-centric, farmer-friendly apps by agritech companies is evidenced.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is a pioneering work in the domain of mobile apps adoption from a farmers’ agribusiness enterprise perspective in an emerging market economy using a mixed-methods approach.
