Abstract

Purpose

This study explored the effects of incorporating RA into geopolymer concrete, particularly examining its performance under ambient and elevated temperatures ranging from ambient temperature to 700°C.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study incorporates RA to replace conventional aggregates in the mix, with replacement levels ranging from 0 to 50%. Each mix designation is identified by a unique ID: RA0, RA10, RA20, RA30, RA40 and RA50, representing the percentage of RA used. The alkaline-to-binder ratio adopted for this study is 0.43.

Findings

The compressive strength starts at 50.51 MPa for 0% RA and decreases to 39.12 MPa for 50% RA after 28 days. It is highest with 0% RA and diminishes as the RA content increases. All mixes show a slight increase in compressive strength when heated to 100°C. However, the compressive strength starts to decrease for all mixes at 300°C. At 700°C, there is a drastic drop in compressive strength for all mixes, indicating significant structural degradation at this temperature.

Originality/value

The study evaluates the qualitative impact of RA on the properties of geopolymer concrete when exposed to severe temperatures. The experimental setup included several tests to assess the concrete mixes' mechanical properties and responses. Specifically, the researchers conducted compressive, flexural and split tensile strength tests.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the mechanical properties of sustainable recycled polypropylene (rPP) composite materials integrated with spherical silicon carbide (SiC) particles.

Design/methodology/approach

A representative volume element (RVE) analysis is employed to predict the Young’s modulus of rPP filled with spherical-shaped SiC at varying volume percentages (i.e. 10, 20 and 30%).

Findings

The investigation reveals that the highest values of Young’s modulus, tensile strength, flexural strength and mode 1 frequency are observed for the 30% rPP/SiC samples, exhibiting increases of 115, 116, 62 and 15%, respectively, compared to pure rPP. Fractography analysis confirms the ductile nature of pure rPP and the brittle behavior of the 30% rPP/SiC composite. Moreover, the RVE method predicts Young’s modulus more accurate than micromechanical models, aligning closely with experimental results. Additionally, results from ANSYS simulation tests show tensile strength, flexural strength and frequency within a 10% error range when compared to experimental data.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the field by demonstrating the mechanical enhancements achievable through the incorporation of sustainable materials like rPP/SiC, thereby promoting environmentally friendly engineering solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

As a result, the current study attempted to investigate the impact of green human resource (GHR) practices on long-term performance, and the path has been explained through organizational identification, which is supported by social identity theory.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the present study's primary goal, data were obtained from manufacturing businesses and analyzed using partial least square (Smart PLS) on the data of 284 Pakistani small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) registered with the small and medium-sized enterprises development authority (SMEDA).

Findings

As a result, the findings show that organizational identification explains the indirect relationship between sustainable performance and green human resource management (GHRM).

Practical implications

To limit the limited negative effect on the environment and society, the findings provide several suggestions for the government authorities and policymakers to adopt green practices and policies.

Originality/value

Green practices are essential for a company to limit its negative environmental effect. Environmental critical problems among shareholders put pressure on the firm to implement GHR practices and organizational identification with long-term success.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the most contested and anticipated research issues is the acceptability of using recycled aggregates instead of fresh aggregates. This study aims to look at the possibility of replacing fresh aggregates with 15%, 30%, 60% and 100% recycled aggregates.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is divided into two stages. The compressive, split tensile, flexural and bond strength of the various mixes were examined in the first phase using untreated recycled concrete aggregates (RCA). The second phase entails chemically treating RCA with a 10% 0.1 M sodium metasilicate solution to evaluate differences in strength, indicating the success of the treatment performed. Microstructural experiments such as scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were also conducted to evaluate the formation of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in treated and untreated RCA specimens.

Findings

The observed findings reveal a decrease in concrete strength with increasing RCA concentration; however, when treated RCA was used, the strengths increased significantly when compared to untreated samples. The findings also include curves indicating the correlation between compressive strength and other mechanical strength parameters for an optimum mix of concrete prepared with 30% RCA replacement.

Originality/value

The study through its novel approach, demonstrates the effect of pretreatment of RCA in the absence of any standardized chemical treatment methodology and presents significant potential in minimizing reliance on fresh aggregates used in concrete, lowering building costs and promoting the use of waste materials in construction.

Abstract

Purpose

The Indian government is grappling in generating sufficient revenue resources through taxation to meet their expenditure on public goods and services. Therefore, the government authorities must possess adequate information on factors affecting the taxation revenue of the country to craft and execute policies effectively. Hence, this study endeavors to explore the determinants of tax revenue by incorporating conventional, economic policy and institutional factors.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) modeling by using the data set from 1991 to 2022 according to the availability of the data.

Findings

The findings illustrate that trade openness, life expectancy, value added by the manufacturing sector and per capita GDP (Gross domestic Product) positively affect the tax efforts of the government in the conventional determinants. Similarly, in economic policy factors, the financial deepening also exhibits a favorable effect. Conversely, the inflation rate positively boosts the tax efforts in the short run, but it ultimately erodes the tax effort of the government in the long run. In the institutional factors, the official development assistance also illustrates a positive effect.

Practical implications

The findings assert that the Indian government should devise better macro-economic and foreign trade policies with expediting the economic restructuring and bolstering their ability to manage and utilize the foreign aid assistance to boost the tax revenue of the country.

Originality/value

To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to incorporate these factors in the Indian context.

Abstract

Purpose

The additive manufacturing process, such as fused filament fabrication based on material extrusion, fabricates the samples layer-by-layer. The various parameters in the process significantly affect the dimensions, structure and mechanical properties of the fabricated parts. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the surface and mechanical properties that can affect the contact characteristics with other materials during tribological tests.

Design/methodology/approach

The investigation of 3D-printed Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) includes the measurement of dimensions, microhardness, surface roughness, surface energy and tensile strength to define material characteristics. The crystallinity is measured using an X-ray diffractometer to understand the hardness behaviour.

Findings

The printing parameters affect its surface roughness, hardness and crystallinity. This change in parameters such as layer thickness and infill density impacts mechanical properties such as hardness and surface roughness, which will influence the contact mechanism with the counter body during any tribological test. The change in a single parameter during the sample fabrication and the change in the surface and mechanical properties are observed.

Research limitations/implications

The material cost plays an important role in conducting numerous destructive tests, which is a major limitation to conducting parameter optimisation by varying more parameters. The study is limited to the as-fabricated samples rather than finished samples and without any heat treatment. Achieving optimal parameters is integral to the success of additive manufacturing, ensuring the production of components with consistent performance.

Practical implications

The study aims at the application of 3D-printed PEEK for bush or journal bearings that can be directly used in practice. The mechanical properties discussed in this paper can fill the gap between theory and practice.

Social implications

The research provides all fundamental properties, including the printing parameters and their effect on the dimensions and surface structure, which are required to understand the material and its use. The results are consistent as at least four samples were tested for tribological behaviour. The conclusion is updated as per suggestions.

Originality/value

The study outlines the relationship between the change in layer thickness and infill density with changes in surface energy, surface roughness, hardness and tensile strength. The deformation and adhesion during the friction test depend on these properties.

Abstract

Purpose

For the sake of sustainable development and environmental preservation, it is crucial to develop UV-curable coatings composed of renewable resources. Castor oil, being both bio-based and economical, serves as the focal point of this research paper. The purpose of this research paper is to synthesize, formulate and apply a UV-curable biobased oligomer ECOSAGMA as a wood coating, with a focus on sustainable development and environmental preservation. Castor oil, being both bio-based and economical, serves as the focal point of this research paper.

Design/methodology/approach

ECOSAGMA was prepared by reacting epoxidized castor oil with sebacic acid, followed by reaction with glycidyl methacrylate through ring opening reaction. The chemical structure of ECOSAGMA was confirmed by Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy, 13C-NMR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The synthesized oligomer was used for UV-curable coating formulations by combining it with varying amounts of TMPTA from 10 to 40 wt.% and studied for their rheological properties. The UV curable formulations were co-photopolymerized into thin coatings and were thoroughly examined based on thermal, chemical and mechanical properties.

Findings

The UV-cured coating containing ECOSAGMA and TMPTA exhibits exceptional mechanical, chemical and thermal properties, underscoring their potential for deployment in real-world application. It is observed that an increase in the concentration of TMPTA is associated with a notable enhancement in the properties of the UV-cured coatings. The UV-cured wood coating, composed of 40 wt.% TMPTA, demonstrates remarkable stain resistance properties.

Originality/value

In conclusion, by embracing eco-friendly and economically conscious principles., it is evident that this synthesized novel castor oil-based oligomer offers a range of valuable properties to the coating such as stain resistance and thermal stability as well as characteristics such as gloss, hardness, adhesion and chemical resistance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the causal relationships among environmental, social and governance reporting (ESGR), stakeholder sustainability awareness, use of artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability culture, innovation performance and climate resilience of organizations across diverse sectors in Sri Lanka.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted among 327 respondents, including senior accounting professionals, operations managers and functional heads to gather company-level data in various industries in Sri Lanka. A disjoint two-stage approach validated the measurement model, and the partial least squares structural equation model (SEM) was used to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The analysis evidences the mediating role of stakeholders' sustainability awareness on the relationship between ESGR and sustainability culture. Furthermore, it emphasizes the role of sustainability culture in driving climate resilience. Innovation performance acts as a moderator, strengthening the relationship between the use of AI and sustainability culture.

Practical implications

The study suggests that organizations should strategically use ESGR, integrate AI and prioritize stakeholder engagement to strengthen their commitment to sustainability. These provide insight for decision-making in organizations seeking to align with sustainable business practices.

Originality/value

It explores the use of AI to enhance ESGR and sustainability culture, providing a broader understanding of how organizations manage AI and stakeholders in sustainability issues.

Purpose

Liquidity is a primary concern for businesses. The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of the collaborative liquidity management within the supply chain. Larger firms prescribe favorable trade terms in the transactions and do not engage in value chain vision sharing with their smaller counterparts. Smaller firms encounter challenges with liquidity and often face the risk of bankruptcy. Such practice can threaten the entire supply chain. Instead, collaborative liquidity management can offer a win–win scenario to both parties. In that case, what are the benefits of implementing a collaborative liquidity management approach across the value chain, and what is the reward?

Design/methodology/approach

The authors selected key liquidity metrics that matter most to the organizations from a cohort of 307 firms from the Indian automobile industry for 10 years (2012–2021). The authors classified the businesses into five distinct revenue-based categories. They emphasized the importance of expanded supply chain finance adoption and demonstrated how collaborative liquidity management strategies boosted return on assets.

Findings

The research confirms the tangible benefits of greater adoption of supply chain finance in realizing supply chain members’ shared vision. The authors challenged the age-old practice of power-based relationships in the supply chain. They recommended a win–win scenario through practical cooperation and increased adoption of SCF by value chain members.

Originality/value

Existing research predominantly focuses on dyadic relationships and is restricted to Europe and China. According to the authors, no comprehensive investigation has been conducted in India. This application of simulation techniques to improve the liquidity performance of companies in developing economies is innovative.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze memes as valuable engagement and marketing communication tools in promoting over-the-top (OTT) platforms by monitoring users' sentiments and offering insightful information about their opinions by drawing themes from viral memes.

Design/methodology/approach

Content analysis of 1,230 user interactions was conducted using NVivo software on Instagram and Twitter pages from May 2022 to July 2023. Data were collected for sentiment analysis (consumer responses), and relevant themes (consumer interactions) were drawn which created the virality of memes.

Findings

Research findings reveal relevant themes, such as relatable, informative and interest-generating, that make memes go viral over social media. The sentiment analysis results showed that the intensity and strength of the positive comments were more substantial, contributing more to the virality of memes.

Practical implications

These findings provide themes for engaging content for OTT advertisers to boost brand recognition and engagement by strategically creating meme content and implementing better marketing communication.

Originality/value

This study uses factual data to offer new perspectives on viral meme propagation. It provides evidence that OTT marketers boost brand value and customer engagement through innovative customer-centric social media analysis.
