Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the phenomenon of service value co-destruction within public service ecosystems (PSEs), focusing on the causes of value co-destruction and the inherent tension between public and private value creation/destruction.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative data was collected through 36 semi-structured interviews with diverse stakeholders within the ecosystem of electricity services in Pakistan, including electricity suppliers, users and connected agencies involved in electricity generation, transmission, regulation, monitoring and coordination tasks.

Findings

The study identified various causes of service value co-destruction in PSEs, involving multiple actors responsible for value co-destruction. The research revealed the co-existence and intersection of public and private values within PSEs, highlighting the complex dynamics between value creation and destruction resulting in value imbalance and value erosion.

Research limitations/implications

Value co-destruction is a plausible outcome of dynamic interactions among various stakeholders in public service delivery, and it can have significant consequences on service quality and public value. Multiple stakeholders, in the governance network, can actively contribute to the co-destruction of service value.

Practical implications

Practitioners should consider the broader ecosystem where not only service providers but also service users and other connected actors, such as public, private and nonprofit organizations, collectively contribute to either co-creating or co-destroying service value.

Originality/value

Grounded in PSL perspective, the findings deepen our understanding of the complexities surrounding public service delivery in PSEs. It provides a fresh perspective on how various actors collectively shape the value of these services.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates public perceptions of food safety in the Czech Republic, particularly focusing on the role of disinformation and trust in regulatory frameworks.

Design/methodology/approach

The research, based on a nationwide survey of 2,729 respondents, explores how different information sources, including search engines, social networks and traditional media, influence trust in food safety. Quota sampling was used to ensure demographic representation.

Findings

Logistic regression analysis highlights that age, gender, education level and exposure to disinformation significantly affect perceptions of health risks from simplified food imports. Older individuals, women and those with lower education are more likely to view these imports as a health threat, while frequent internet users show less concern. The findings highlight the critical impact of misinformation and disinformation on public opinion, emphasizing the need for enhanced media literacy and targeted public health communication.

Practical implications

The country governments should ensure the consistency and quality of the food safety programmes and transparency in their communications to strengthen public confidence. Hence, a systematic investigation and review of the food safety systems and updating the regulatory frameworks are necessary in order to ensure higher quality and safety of food.

Social implications

The research results represent a valuable platform for regulatory authorities as well as for the development of concepts of media and scientific literacy.

Originality/value

The study provides insights for policymakers on improving food safety communication in a post-communist context, contributing to broader discussions on combating misinformation in Europe.

Abstract

Purpose

Interorganizational knowledge sharing (IKS) is an important strategy for organizations to obtain exterior knowledge resources to enhance innovation and value co-creation in megaprojects. However, little research has deeply investigated multiple attributes of organizational motivations and the combinatorial effects of these motivations on facilitating IKS. Based on resource dependency theory, this study examined the net and combinatorial effects of four types of motivations (i.e. image motivations, reactive motivations, project-based co-creative economic motivations and cross-project co-creative economic motivations).

Design/methodology/approach

Questionnaire surveys were administered to 244 practitioners with over 10 years of experience in construction megaprojects. The collected data were analyzed using a partial least square-structural equation model (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA).

Findings

The findings of PLS-SEM support that image and project-based co-creative economic motivations positively drive IKS. The results of fsQCA reveal three types of efficacious configurations, including comprehensive benefits-integrated driven, short-term benefits-dominated driven and long-term benefits-dominated driven configurations.

Originality/value

This study provides insight into broadening the understanding of multidimensional organizational motivations for IKS and fostering the configurational perspective to their effects with the idea that one size does not fit all. Managers should develop effective interventions considering the combination of various motivations and use multi-layered incentive structures that reward both immediate project-specific outcomes and long-term relationship-building efforts.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to address citizen agency in value co-creation (VCC) in the context of public administration. It asks how citizen agency is presented in the VCC discussion to deepen the understanding of VCC as a dynamic interplay between public organisations and citizens adopting various forms of agency.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilises the integrative literature review method, applying a two-round search process. Altogether, 40 scientific articles were subjected to content analysis to acquire a deeper understanding of citizen agency.

Findings

The VCC discussion represents citizens as resource integrators, experiencers, co-producers and beneficiaries. In addition, the study raises the questions of activity and voluntariness and the level of involvement linked to citizen agency in VCC. The connection between the VCC discussion and collective-side citizen activity is weak because the democratic aspects of the discussion are limited.

Research limitations/implications

This article contributes to the VCC discussion by painting a clear picture of citizen agency, which is also linked to the democratic essence and potential of VCC. It also identifies the potential weaknesses of the VCC conceptual debate.

Originality/value

This article sheds light on citizen agency in the context of the VCC discussion, which is an understudied issue in public administration research. The present study helps to enhance the discussion concerning the democratic potential of VCC.

Abstract

Purpose

The construction and real estate sectors are vital to national economies, but traditional construction methods often lead to challenges such as safety risks, noise and environmental pollution. While intelligent construction is believed to mitigate these issues, there is a lack of solid empirical evidence on whether it truly benefits the general public. This paper seeks to explore the societal benefits of intelligent construction from the public’s perspective, addressing this research gap.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopts a two-step approach. First, topic mining is conducted to identify topics closely related to the public’s daily life, such as environmental impact, construction traffic management and construction technologies. These topics are then analyzed through sentiment analysis using a bidirectional long short-term memory model with attention mechanism to determine whether the public has a favorable view of these aspects of intelligent construction, indirectly demonstrating the benefits to the public.

Findings

The primary topics identified include “industry development,” “technology enterprise,” “construction equipment,” “intelligent technology,” “environmental protection,” “robots” and “construction traffic management.” Sentiment analysis shows that public sentiment is overwhelmingly positive across all topics and regions, with “environmental protection,” “construction traffic management” and “robots” receiving the most favorable reactions.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical evidence of the societal benefits of intelligent construction from the public’s viewpoint using social media data. The results highlight the need for continued promotion and adoption of intelligent construction due to its positive impact on society.

Abstract

Purpose

The protection of industrial heritage emerged as a major concern when those buildings and installations representative of the industry, became at risk. North Africa, considered the geographical gateway to European countries, experienced enormous industrial activity during the French colonial era. Industrial buildings such as the flour mills, were built during this era of colonial rule. Today, a lack of legislation concerning industrial heritage has left this type of buildings with no protection, leading this paper to a preservation process. The aim of this paper is to locate and identify the flour mills of the 19th and 20th centuries in Algeria.

Design/methodology/approach

This research consists of cross-referencing data from archived documents against the geographical location.

Findings

The results obtained are the first step in the process of preservation. The success of this research can be summarized as follows: identification of 88.46% of the flour mills in Algeria by means of the inventory data collected, and their location, with the use of a crisp logic, the remaining 9.62% with the use of fuzzy logic by the attribution of a “fuzzy radius” with a total localization and identification of 98.08%.

Originality/value

The use of both crisp (Boolean) and fuzzy logic as part of the geographical localization method.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to explore the factors influencing the adoption intention of eco-friendly smart home appliances among residents in densely populated urban areas of a developing country.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research approach was employed to gather data from 348 respondents through purposive sampling. A comparative analysis strategy was then utilized to investigate the adoption of eco-friendly smart home appliances, combining both linear (PLS-SEM) and non-linear (fsQCA) approaches.

Findings

The results obtained from PLS-SEM highlight that performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value, and environmental knowledge significantly influence the adoption intention of eco-friendly smart home appliances. However, the findings suggest that effort expectancy, social influence, and habit are not significantly associated with customers' intention to adopt eco-friendly smart home appliances. On the other hand, the fsQCA results identified eight configurations of antecedents, offering valuable insights into interpreting the complex combined causal relationships among these factors that can generate (each combination) the adoption intention of eco-friendly smart home appliances among densely populated city dwellers.

Research limitations/implications

This study offers crucial marketing insights for various stakeholders, including homeowners, technology developers and manufacturers, smart home service providers, real estate developers, and government entities. The findings provide guidance on how these stakeholders can effectively encourage customers to adopt eco-friendly smart home appliances, aligning with future environmental sustainability demands. The research implications underscore the significance of exploring the antecedents that influence customers' adoption intention of eco-friendly technologies, contributing to the attainment of future sustainability goals.

Originality/value

The environmental sustainability of smart homes, particularly in densely populated city settings in developing countries, has received limited attention in previous studies. Therefore, this study aims to address the pressing issue of global warming and make a meaningful contribution to future sustainability goals related to smart housing technologies. Therefore, this study employs a comprehensive approach, combining both PLS-SEM (linear) and fsQCA (non-linear) techniques to provide a more thorough examination of the factors influencing the adoption of environmentally sustainable smart home appliances.

Abstract

Purpose

Evaluating project success within the construction industry presents challenges due to the unique characteristics of the sector, the complexity of projects, and the involvement of diverse stakeholders. Conducting a bibliometric analysis, this paper aims to unravel the major research themes and methodologies utilised by researchers in studying the critical success criteria for construction projects, as well as extracting these success criteria.

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers systematically searched and screened 95 papers from Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases. This study conducted research focus parallelship network (RFPN) analysis and keywords co-occurrence network (KCON) analysis using BibExcel and Gephi to cluster the papers, illuminate the relationships among keywords within each cluster, and identify the primary research directions.

Findings

Using the RFPN analysis, this study classified the papers into three distinct clusters: infrastructure and public projects success, risk and knowledge management, and contractors and procurement management. Statistical techniques such as structural equation modelling (SEM) and multi-criteria decision-making methods such as analytic hierarchy process (AHP) have been used to analyse project success in the construction industry.

Research limitations/implications

Considering the intensified demand for streamlined digital interactions and the increasing emphasis on sustainability and safety performance, construction companies are recommended to allocate greater investments toward the automation and digitisation of their products and processes. Prioritising modular construction and embracing transformative technologies alongside data science is crucial for enabling well-informed decision-making, and enhancing project success.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by conducting a quantitative and systematic evaluation of the literature on project success criteria in the construction industry and uncovering key research areas. It addresses the pressing need to understand the complexities of construction projects amidst evolving industry dynamics and emerging disruptions. Moreover, by highlighting the implications of digital innovations and modular construction, this study urges deeper exploration into their impact on project performance and stakeholder satisfaction. This research sets a comprehensive framework for investigating the interplay between project complexity, technological advancements, and sustainable practices in the construction sector, paving the way for strategic advancements in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

With the rise of digital construction, using organizational capabilities to improve project performance in a turbulent environment has become critical for the high-quality development of the construction industry. However, the complex relationships among them remain unclear. Therefore, this study explores these linear relationships under the digital construction mode and reveals the driving mechanism of multi-factor linkage on project performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 263 project participants in digital construction projects in China using a questionnaire. Hypothesis testing was conducted using partial least square structural equation modeling, and the differentiated patterns of project performance formation were revealed through fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis.

Findings

Organizational information technology, innovation, coordination, integration management and emergency management capabilities improve project performance. Environmental turbulence is a positive moderator between coordination capabilities and project performance, while other capabilities do not align with environmental turbulence. The research obtained five equivalent configurations for achieving high project performance, such as “capability layout” and “internal driven,” and two paths that lead to non-high project performance. Finally, in contrast to existing studies, we discovered the outstanding contribution of emergency management capabilities to project performance and the auxiliary effect of information technology capabilities.

Originality/value

This study innovatively integrates a dimensional framework of construction project organizations’ capabilities under a digital construction mode and extends the organizational capabilities to the specific and operational capability dimension level. Furthermore, this study opens the “black box” of the influence of organizational capabilities on project performance in environmental turbulence and reveals the differentiated and equivalent configurations for the formation of project performance. The study broadens the theoretical perspective of organizational capabilities on project performance research in the digital context and provides practical enlightenment for guiding the capability configuration of construction project organizations in a turbulent environment. Abstract

Purpose

This systematic review aims to identify the key determinants of knowledge transfer (KT) activities among researchers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study systematically reviewed KT literature in academic settings from 1995–2023. The authors searched Web of Science and Scopus using predefined keywords, following PRISMA guidelines for screening and eligibility assessment. From 158 selected articles, the authors extracted data and conducted a descriptive analysis to map KT activities’ evolution. A narrative synthesis approach categorized determinants of researchers’ KT activities.

Findings

The systematic review findings revealed a general conceptual framework that categorizes the identified determinants of KT into four categories. At the individual level, the factors are related to the sociodemographic characteristics of the researcher (e.g. gender, age, experience), their psychological aspects (e.g. attitude, intrinsic motivation, intention) and personal characteristics (e.g. self-efficacy, communication skills). At the research team level, leadership style and team dynamics. At the organizational level, the findings emphasize university characteristics (e.g. size, structure and ranking), KT culture installed and university resources. At the inter-organizational level, the key determinants were funding sources, network strength and trust.

Research limitations/implications

The studies included in our database were different in terms of contexts, country of the study, the disciplines of KT and the types of KT activities examined. This variety restricts the direct comparison of research findings thus the generalizability of our conclusions. Future research should focus on specific contexts, disciplines, countries or types of KT activities to provide generalizable findings.

Practical implications

A better understanding of all the factors influencing KT among university researchers is essential for several reasons. First, it will enable the government to develop effective policies to promote KT ecosystems. Second, universities can create strategies, policies and programs to support researchers’ engagement in KT activities. Finally, researchers can be more strategic in their KT efforts.

Originality/value

This systematic review contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive conceptual framework that identifies KT determinants at different levels and fills a gap in the existing literature that only addresses specific aspects of KT determinants. This framework can be a theoretical reference for future empirical studies. Furthermore, it practically provides recommendations for different actors including, government, universities and researchers.
