Abstract

Purpose

With the rise in international construction projects, addressing the psychological health concerns of expatriate construction professionals (EXCPs) has become of paramount importance. Therefore, this study aims to identify and evaluate effective intervention measures to promote optimal psychological health and well-being in overseas working environments.

Design/methodology/approach

Intervention measures were identified through a comprehensive literature review. Subsequently, using a case study of Chinese international contractors, data were collected via a quantitative survey administered to EXCPs holding managerial positions in international construction projects. Fuzzy synthetic evaluation was employed to analyze the data.

Findings

The findings identified 23 intervention measures and 4 constructs, among them, measures focused on enhancing organizational justice and training practices offer the greatest potential for enhancing the psychological health and well-being during international assignments. Furthermore, the analysis showed that the overall criticality of the intervention measures to the international contractors is significant, suggesting that if put into practice, the psychological health and well-being of EXCPs can be significantly enhanced.

Originality/value

While prior research has explored intervention measures suitable for construction professionals working on domestic projects, little attention has been paid to EXCPs in the context of international construction projects. This study offers an initial exploration of the most crucial intervention measures and provides a valuable resource for policymakers and practitioners seeking to establish a psychologically healthy working environment for international construction projects.

Abstract

Purpose

In the current context of change, leadership is significant in developing employees' commitment to change. In this work, the authors analysed the relationship between inclusive leadership and commitment to change and the mediating effect of job satisfaction between inclusive leadership and commitment to change.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a questionnaire, 256 employees from Brazil and Spain were interviewed. The hypotheses were tested through structural equations.

Findings

The results indicated that inclusive leadership is related to individuals' commitment to change and that job satisfaction mediates the relationship between leadership and commitment to change.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature on organisational change behaviour and the relationship between two critical contents – leadership and commitment to change – and points out the role of job satisfaction in this relationship. In addition, this work incorporates the variable country culture into the analysis model; however, it is not found to be statistically significant.

Abstract

Purpose

Deficiencies or imbalances in dietary fat intake may influence on mental and neurological functions of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This study aims to compare body mass index (BMI) and the amount of fatty acids intake in the autistic patients with the comparison group.

Design/methodology/approach

This case-control was carried out on 200 randomly selected children from 5 to 15 years old (100 autistic patients as the case group and 100 healthy children as the comparison group) in Tehran, Iran. The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess the intake of calorie, macronutrients and different types of dietary fatty acids including saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), linoleic acid (LA), α-Linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and trans fatty acids.

Findings

The autistic patients had higher BMI, birth weight and mother’s BMI compared to the comparison group (All p < 0.01). No significant difference was found in the amount of dietary calorie, protein, carbohydrate and total fat intake between two groups. The risk of ASD was associated with higher intake of MUFAs (OR: 3.18, CI%:1.13–4.56, p = 0.04), PUFAs (OR: 4.12, CI95%: 2.01–6.25, p < 0.01) and LA (OR: 4.76, CI95%: 1.34–14.32, p < 0.01).

Originality/value

The autistic children had higher BMI and higher intake of unsaturated fatty acids except for omega-3 fatty acids. Further longitudinal studies are warranted.

Abstract

Purpose

Attending academic conferences is important for career progression. However, conferences can be experienced as exclusionary by historically marginalised groups. Non-attendance through exclusionary event design thus has far-reaching consequences, which is a social and structural justice issue. This research therefore aims to shine a light on event design in academic conferences, and its relationship to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Design/methodology/approach

Through empirical study, we address the question “Are academic conferences communicating a commitment to DEI for delegates from historically marginalised groups, and if so, how?”. Using a content protocol (Loh et al., 2022) and signalling theory (Bradley et al., 2023), we analyse the publicly available conference materials of 70 tourism, leisure, events and hospitality academic conferences planned or convened between 2023 and 2025 to assess DEI discourses and practices for evidence of conference design that fosters inclusivity, belongingness and therefore addresses justice.

Findings

References to one or more elements of DEI were found in the discourses of around one quarter of the conferences. However, for BIPOC [1], precarious academics, those from the LGBTQIA+ or disability communities, those with caring responsibilities, those on low or no incomes or with visa requirements, and to a large degree still for women, there were few signs within conference design practices that could be construed as conveying a welcoming culture. We therefore argue that academic conferences within the fields of tourism, leisure, events and hospitality are perpetuating inequity, exclusion and injustice through failing to give full consideration to whom their event design practices are inviting to participate. This is an opportunity lost, and we provide a checklist for conference organisers to help them communicate that historically marginalised academics are welcome and belong at their event.

Originality/value

We believe this is the first study to take a DEI lens to an examination of academic conferences, and apply a content protocol and signalling theory as analytic tools in the process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to examine racial/ethnic differences in AFS use and their contributing factors using a decomposition analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The 2018 National Financial Capability Study dataset was used to analyze the four major types of AFS—title loans, payday loans, pawnshops, and rent-to-own (RTO) stores—as proxies for AFS use. The study conducted both logistic regression analysis and decomposition analysis to examine the contributing factors.

Findings

The results of the logistic regression analysis demonstrated significant disparities in the use of alternative financial services (AFS) among racial and ethnic groups. Specifically, it was found that Blacks were more likely to utilize title and payday loans, pawnshops, and rent-to-own (RTO) stores compared to Whites. In contrast, Hispanics and Asians/individuals of other ethnicities were less likely to use title loans, but Hispanics were more likely to opt for payday loans over Whites. Furthermore, objective financial literacy exhibited a negative association with the likelihood of using these four types of AFS, whereas subjective financial literacy consistently showed a positive association. When examining the decomposition analyses, it became evident that both objective and subjective financial literacy played significant roles in explaining the racial and ethnic disparities in AFS usage. However, the patterns varied in three specific pairwise comparisons.

Originality/value

This study revealed the relative contributions of each factor to the racial/ethnic disparities through decomposition analysis. Our Fairlie decomposition approach addressed non-linearities within the decomposition framework, particularly in estimating the probabilities of AFS utilization, given its binary outcomes. This extension builds upon the Oaxaca decomposition. The study offers valuable insights into the variations in AFS use among different racial and ethnic groups.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to illustrate the manifold ways in which artificial intelligence (AI) serves as both a sentinel and a potential intruder in the realm of personal data protection. Additionally, it delves into the legal and ethical frameworks governing the use of AI in data-centric contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a qualitative doctrinal methodology, this research examines existing literatures on AI, data privacy and related laws/regulations. This study explores the multifaceted role of AI in shaping data privacy and the symbiotic relationship between AI and data privacy.

Findings

It was discovered that there are insufficient AI-specific regulations, and that AI both fortifies and threatens the sanctity of personal data. As such, there is the need for transparency, fairness, accountability and adherence to data privacy regulations to ensure effective use of AI in data privacy.

Research limitations/implications

This study limits itself to the intersection of AI and data privacy and how innovation, legislations and ethical considerations are intricately intertwined.

Originality/value

By examining case studies and examples from the real world, this study endeavors to provide a comprehensive perspective on the dynamic landscape of AI and data privacy. It forecasts future trends and challenges, offering insights into how AI may continue to influence and safeguard data privacy while simultaneously posing novel risks.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine whether the financial ecosystem is reliable for evaluating a company’s financial performance at various lifecycle stages or whether value-based performance metrics like Economic Value Added (EVA) are the most comprehensive indicators regardless of the company’s lifecycle stage. The evaluation will analyse the importance of value-based and accounting performance benchmarks (EVA, Return on Capital Employed, Return on Equity and Earnings per Share) in creating shareholder value, as measured by market value added, throughout the company’s lifecycle.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a robust empirical analysis of 228 Indian firms listed on the National Stock Exchange Nifty 500 Index from 2006 to 2023. By considering firms of different sizes and ages, the authors aim to capture and analyse any distinct impact across various stages of their lifecycles. Using quantile regression for analysis equips the authors to effectively address extreme events such as the 2008 global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, making the method particularly suitable for conditionally distributed samples based on size and age.

Findings

The research reveals that various performance indicators are crucial at different stages of a company’s lifecycle for generating wealth for shareholders. However, considering the significance of the EVA measure, it is recommended that policymakers standardize the calculation of EVA and mandate its disclosure.

Originality/value

The authors comprehensively analysed the economic value addition relative to a company’s size and age, going beyond previous studies that focused solely on specific size categories. This offers managers valuable insights into aligning business performance measures with the various stages of the business lifecycle.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on recent developments in the Uppsala model, we first examine the role of business model innovation (BMI) in the internationalization process of firms and then determine to what extent international experience and psychic distance have a moderating effect between BMI and the success of a firm’s international initiatives.

Design/methodology/approach

We apply a multiple hierarchical regression model to a sample of 168 firms of two border regions in Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia) and Austria (Carinthia).

Findings

We find empirical support for the moderating role of both psychic distance and international experience in the relationship between business model innovation and the success of internationalization initiatives.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the evolutionary perspective of the internationalization process of firms by adding new aspects related to the role of business model innovation to the most re-cent developments of the Uppsala model. From an empirical point of view, the paper contributes to the literature by identifying and testing two boundary conditions that shape the relationship between BMI and international success.

Abstract

Purpose

In the evolving digital work landscape, where cyberloafing has become a notable challenge, this study aims to investigate the mechanisms through which organizations can effectively reduce such behaviors. Specifically, the research explores the role of employee adaptability in mitigating cyberloafing, taking into account the influences of temporal leadership, teamwork attitudes, and competitive work environments.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing the broaden-and-build theory and the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, we analyzed data from 245 employees through structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate how various factors influence cyberloafing.

Findings

The results indicate that employee adaptability significantly mitigates cyberloafing and serves as a mediating factor between temporal leadership, teamwork attitudes, and the impact of competitive work environments on cyberloafing. Temporal leadership and teamwork attitudes positively correlate with increased adaptability, thereby reducing cyberloafing. Conversely, competitive work environments, while slightly enhancing adaptability, substantially increase cyberloafing.

Originality/value

The study contributes new insights into the dynamics of cyberloafing, emphasizing the critical roles of adaptability, teamwork attitudes, and temporal leadership in reducing such behaviors. It underscores the need for organizations to foster a supportive culture that minimizes competitive pressures and promotes teamwork and leadership strategies conducive to high productivity and minimal cyberloafing. This research offers practical implications for designing workplace strategies aimed at boosting productivity and curbing undesirable online behaviors during work hours.

Abstract

Purpose

The current study seeks to investigate and determine the principal barriers to the adoption of work–life balance (WLB) practices amongst construction companies operating in the developing countries using Lagos, Nigeria as a case study.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts a survey research technique. Snowball sampling technique was adopted to identify the target respondents for the administration of questionnaire. A total of 156 questionnaires were distributed and a response rate of 66% (103 questionnaires were completely filled and returned) was attained. Data elicited were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Findings

The results from the exploratory factors analysis show that the principal barriers to the adoption of WLB practices amongst construction companies in Lagos, Nigeria are categorised into four components: nature of construction job and limited evidence on impact of WLB, support, awareness and culture, lack of involvement of management staff and organisational factors.

Originality/value

This study contributed to more effective WLB studies by highlighting the barriers to the adoption of WLB practices in the construction sector. An understanding of these barriers can aid policy makers and management personnel in construction organisations as well as facilitate development of strategies required to reduce the barriers to WLB practices in the construction sector.
