Abstract
The use of enhanced strains leads to an improved performance of low order finite elements. A modified Hu‐Washizu variational formulation with orthogonal stress and strain functions is considered. The use of orthogonal functions leads to a formulation with B (overline) ‐strain matrices which avoids numerical inversion of matrices. Depending on the choice of the stress and strain functions in Cartesian or natural element coordinates one can recover, for example, the hybrid stress element P‐S of Pian‐Sumihara or the Trefftz‐type element QE2 of Piltner and Taylor. With the mixed formulation discussed in this paper a simple extension of the high precision elements P‐S and QE2 to general non‐linear problems is possible, since the final computer implementation of the mixed element is very similar to the implementation of a displacement element. Instead of sparse B‐matrices, sparse B (overline) ‐matrices are used and the typical matrix inversions of hybrid and mixed methods can be avoided. The two most efficient four‐node B (overline) ‐elements for plane strain and plane stress in this study are denoted B (overline)(x, y)‐QE4 and B (overline)(ξ, η)‐QE4.

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

Abstract
The time‐discretization process of transient equation systems is an important concern in computational heat transfer applications. As such, the present paper describes a formal basis towards providing the theoretical concepts, evolution and development, and characterization of a wide class of time discretized operators for transient heat transfer computations. Therein, emanating from a common family tree and explained via a generalized time weighted philosophy, the paper addresses the development and evolution of time integral operators [IO], and leading to integration operators [InO] in time encompassing single‐step integration operators [SSInO], multi‐step integration operators [MSInO], and a class of finite element in time integration operators [FETInO] including the relationships and the resulting consequences. Also depicted are those termed as discrete numerically assigned [DNA] algorithmic markers essentially comprising of both: the weighted time fields, and the corresponding conditions imposed upon the dependent variable approximation, to uniquely characterize a wide class of transient algorithms. Thereby, providing a plausible standardized formal ideology when referring to and/or relating time discretized operators applicable to transient heat transfer computations.

Abstract
Numerical aspects of initial stability analysis of a cylindrical shell of non‐constant parameters along the generator and under non‐symmetrical loads are considered. A variational approach based on Sanders' and Donnell's non‐linear equations of thin, elastic shells is applied. The problem is decomposed to determine: the stability vectors in the axial direction in the first step, and the critical load and the stability vector in the circumferential direction in the second step. The discretization is based on finite Fourier representations and the finite difference method. To find the approximate stability vector in the axial direction an auxiliary problem for axisymmetric loads is solved. The error of the method is defined and the effectiveness of the method is estimated. The decomposition leads to small and fast algorithms suitable for personal computers. Shells with constant and stepped thicknesses under wind loads are calculated as examples. Tested algorithms show considerable effectiveness and good accuracy of results.

The aim of this paper is to help the users of FE and BE techniques to get better value from a large collection of papers on the subjects. Categories in biomechanics included in this survey are: orthopaedic mechanics, dental mechanics, cardiovascular mechanics, soft tissue mechanics, biological flow, impact injury, and other fields of applications. An axisymmetrical membrane element for large deformations is developed which is based on Ogden's non‐linear elastic material law. Special attention is given to the linearization procedure to obtain a quadratically convergence behaviour within Newton's method.
