Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of authentic leadership on the work–family balance (WFB) of followers by focusing on the mediating roles of leader–member exchange (LMX) and work-to-family enrichment (WFE) and the moderating role of traditionality in China.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using field survey research design. Participants included 206 employees in a pharmaceutical company in China.

Findings

The results indicate that LMX and WFE sequentially mediated the positive relationship between authentic leadership and WFB. In addition, traditionality strengthened the relationship between authentic leadership and LMX.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the integration of authentic leadership literature and the WFB model. This research also indicates that authentic leadership is a source of enhancing employees’ WFB. However, data are correlational and cross-sectional, which limits the ability to draw causal relationships.

Practical implications

The findings reveal that authentic leadership is effective in inducing followers’ WFB. The value of traditionality can strengthen the effect of authentic leadership.

Originality/value

This study addresses unexplored theoretical predictions and provides new directions for authentic leadership and work–family research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the multiaxial fretting fatigue, wear and fracture characteristics of 35CrMoA steel under the elliptical loading path.

Design/methodology/approach

By keeping the contact pressure and torsional shear cyclic stress amplitude unchanged; the axial cyclic stress amplitude varied from 650 MPa to 850 MPa. The fretting fatigue test was carried out on MTS809 testing machine, and the axial cyclic strain response and fatigue life of the material were analyzed. The fretting zone and fracture surface morphology were observed by scanning electron microscope. The composition of wear debris was detected by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer.

Findings

In this study, with the increase of axial stress amplitude, 35CrMoA steel will be continuously softened, and the cyclic softening degree increases. The fretting fatigue life decreases unevenly. The fretting scars in the stick region are elongated in the axial direction. The area of fracture crack propagation zone decreases. In addition, the results indicate that wear debris in the slip region is spherical and has higher oxygen content.

Originality/value

There were few literatures about the multiaxial fretting fatigue behavior of 35CrMoA steel, and most scholars focused on the contact pressure. This paper reveals the effect of axial cyclic stress on fretting fatigue and wear of 35CrMoA steel under the elliptical loading path.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the philosophy of retail service quality, this study aims to empirically investigate how salespeople’s personal interaction affects customers’ positive word-of-mouth (WOM) intention through the lens of affective customer experience and consumers’ cross-cultural attitudes toward domestic or foreign products.

Design/methodology/approach

The hypothesis was tested with a two-step structural equation model using survey data obtained from 529 shopping center customers in China.

Findings

The positive impact of salespeople’s personal interaction on customers’ positive WOM intention is fully mediated by affective customer experience. In addition, consumer ethnocentrism strengthens the positive impact of salespeople’s personal interaction on affective customer experience, whereas this study fails to find the moderating effect of foreign product affinity.

Practical implications

To increase customers’ positive WOM intention, store managers need to encourage their frontline sales personnel to personally interact with customers to support customers’ problem-solving. Also, frontline salespeople should pay more attention to consumers’ cross-cultural attitudes such as consumer ethnocentrism when interacting with their customers.

Originality/value

By linking affective customer experience and consumers’ cross-cultural attitudes of ethnocentrism and affinity toward domestic or foreign products, this study further extends the knowledge of retail service quality on the relationship between salespeople’s personal interaction and customers’ positive WOM intention.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand the effect of particle content, applied load and sliding speed on the tribological properties of A356-SiCP composites manufactured using a newly developed vacuum stir casting technique.

Design/methodology/approach

A356 alloy reinforced with 10, 15 and 20 vol% SiC particles was prepared by vacuum stir casting. Tribological tests were carried out on block-on-ring tribometer under dry sliding conditions, room temperature. Wear mechanism was investigated by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersion spectrum.

Findings

SiCP is homogeneously dispersed in the matrix. The increase in SiCP content decrease wear rate, but it leads to an increase in coefficient of friction. The wear rate increase and friction coefficient present different variation trends with increasing load. For A356-20%SiCP composite, when the load is less than 10 MPa, wear rate and friction coefficient under sliding speed of 400 rpm are lower than those of 200 rpm. Wear mechanism transition from abrasion, oxidation, delamination, adhesion to plastic flow as load and sliding speed increasing.

Practical implications

Results of this study will help guide the use of A356-SiCP in many automotive products such as brake rotors, brake pads, brake drums and pistons.

Originality/value

There are few paper studies the effect of particle content, applied load and sliding speed on the tribological properties of A356-SiCP composites. Aluminum matrix composites with uniform distribution of reinforcing particles were successfully prepared by using the newly developed vacuum stir casting technique.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the accuracy of fused deposition modeling (FDM) machines.

Design/methodology/approach

An integrated error model and compensation methods are developed to improve the accuracy of FDM machines. The effects of machine-dependent and process-dependent errors are included in this integrated model. The error model is then used to obtain compensated values for the printed object. A three-dimensional artifact is designed for the FDM machine characterization. This process takes place only once and an error model for the machine is then developed. An artifact is designed that is feature rich and its coordinates are measured by the coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The CMM digitized values for the three-dimensional artifact are used to calculate the coefficients of the model. The integrated error model of the machine can be used to obtain the compensated values for any given part models. The coefficients of the integrated error model are machine-dependent and represent machine error estimation. To demonstrate this, two test examples are used and modified based on the machine model to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Findings

The errors from machine mechanical structure and process are evaluated. The variation trend of each error is analyzed. The uncompensated and compensated models are compared, and the effectiveness of the integrated error model and compensation method is analyzed and validated.

Originality/value

An effective integrated error model with compensation is developed, which can be used to improve the FDM machines accuracy.

Purpose

To improve the high-temperature wear properties of the SiCp/A359 composite, foamed iron-reinforced SiCp/A359 composite (A359–SiCp/Fe) is prepared. The purpose of this study is to investigate the tribological behavior and mechanism of the A359–SiCp/Fe composites at different temperatures (100–500 °C) and loads (7 N, 10 N and 12 N).

Design/methodology/approach

The A359–SiCp/Fe composite was fabricated by vacuum-assisted infiltration. The dry sliding tribological behaviors of A359–SiCp/Fe composite were investigated using the ball-on-disc-type tribometer. The worn surface and wear morphology of the longitudinal section were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy and metallographic microscope.

Findings

The critical transition temperature for severe wear in A359–SiCp/Fe composite was 50–100 °C higher than in SiCp/A359 composite. Foamed iron prevents exfoliation cracks from penetrating deeper into the matrix. The friction coefficient stability of the A359–SiCp/Fe composite was higher than the unreinforced composite at elevated temperatures. With the increase in temperature, the friction-affected layer was severely worn, and the wear mechanism transferred from abrasion and delamination to oxidation and plastic flow, respectively.

Originality/value

The preparation procedure for aluminum matrix composites reinforced with foamed metal has been less reported, and the research on the tribological behavior and mechanism of A359–SiCp/Fe composite at various temperatures is insufficient. The foamed iron structure considerably enhances the wear properties of SiCp/A359 composite in elevated temperature conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

It was verified that the micro-texture in the front and back of the tool at the same time had a positive effect on improving the milling behavior and surface quality of the tool. The purpose of this study is to explore the rationality of simultaneous placement of micro-textures on the front and rear surfaces of ball-end milling cutters, analyze the influence of micro-texture parameters on tool milling behavior and workpiece surface quality, reveal its internal mechanism, and obtain the best micro-texture parameters by optimization.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the mechanism of micro-texture is studied based on the energy loss model. Second, the orthogonal experiment is designed to analyze the influence of micro-texture parameters on tool milling behavior and reveal its mechanism by combining simulation technology and cutting experiment. Finally, the parameters are optimized based on the artificial bee colony algorithm.

Findings

The results show that the simultaneous placement of micro-texture on the rake face and flank face of the tool has a positive effect on improving the milling behavior and surface quality of the tool. Taking milling force, tool wear and surface roughness as the evaluation criteria, the optimal parameter combination is obtained: the rake face micro-texture diameter is 50 µm, the distance from the micro-texture is 200 µm and the distance from the cutting edge is 110 µm; the diameter of the micro-textured flank is 40 µm, the distance from the micro-texture is 170 µm and the distance from the cutting edge is 130 µm.

Originality/value

Taking milling force, tool wear and surface roughness as the evaluation criteria, the optimal parameter combination is obtained: the rake face micro-texture diameter is 50 µm, the distance from the micro-texture is 200 µm and the distance from the cutting edge is 110 µm; the diameter of the micro-textured flank is 40 µm, the distance from the micro-texture is 170 µm and the distance from the cutting edge is 130 µm, which provides theoretical support for the further study of the micro-textured tool.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite a significant focus on customer evaluation and sentiment analysis, limited attention has been paid to discrete emotional perspective in terms of the emotionality used in text. This paper aims to extend the general-sentiment dictionary in Chinese to a restaurant-domain-specific dictionary, visualize spatiotemporal sentiment trends, identify the main discrete emotions that affect customers’ ratings in a restaurant setting and identify constituents of influential emotions.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 683,610 online restaurant reviews downloaded from Dianping.com were analyzed by a sentiment dictionary optimized by the authors; the main emotions (joy, love, trust, anger, sadness and surprise) that affect online ratings were explored by using multiple linear regression methods. After tracking these sentiment review texts, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and LDA models with term frequency-inverse document frequency as weights were used to find the factors that constitute influential emotions.

Findings

The results show that it is viable to optimize or expand sentiment dictionary by word similarity. The findings highlight that love and anger have the highest effect on online ratings. The main factors that constitute consumers’ anger (local characteristics, incorrect food portions and unobtrusive location) and love (comfortable dining atmosphere, obvious local characteristics and complete supporting services) are identified. Different from previous studies, negativity bias is not observed, which poses a question of whether it has to do with Chinese culture.

Practical implications

These findings can help managers monitor the true quality of restaurant service in an area on time. Based on the results, restaurant operators can better decide which aspects they should pay more attention to; platforms can operate better and can have more manageable webpage settings; and consumers can easily capture the quality of restaurants to make better purchase decisions.

Originality/value

This study builds upon the existing general sentiment dictionary in Chinese and, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, is the first to provide a restaurant-domain-specific sentiment dictionary and use it for analysis. It also reveals the constituents of two prominent emotions (love and anger) in the case of restaurant reviews.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study was to examine how high-social and low-social virtual live streamers affect consumers' experiential value (utilitarian value and hedonic value) and the mechanism and boundary conditions behind the effect.

Design/methodology/approach

The research consisted of four laboratory experiments.

Findings

The results showed that socialness has a positive significant effect on experiential value. Social presence mediated the effect of socialness on utilitarian value and hedonic value. In the relationship between socialness and experiential value, the moderating effects of communication style and situation were significant.

Practical implications

This study provides managerial implications for online stores about the use of virtual live streamers.

Originality/value

The finding of this paper extends the literature on virtual humans or avatars, enriches the literature on the characteristics of virtual humans and tests the explanatory power of social response theory.

Abstract

Purpose

Online influencers are increasingly used by brands around the globe to establish brand communication. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of social media content in terms of presentation style and brand communication among online influencers in China. The authors identified how characteristics of social media posts influence young consumers’ engagement with the posts.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyzed 1,779 posts from the Sina Weibo accounts of ten top-ranked online influencers by combining traditional content analysis with Web data crawling of audience engagement with social media posts.

Findings

Online influencers in China more frequently used photos than videos to communicate with their social media audience. Altogether 8% and 6% of posts carried information about promotion and event, respectively. Posts with promotional incentives as well as event information were more likely to engage audiences. Altogether 22% of the sampled social media posts mentioned brands. Posts with brand information, however, were less likely to engage audiences. Furthermore, having long text is more effective than photos/images in generating likes from social media audiences.

Originality/value

Combining content analysis of social media posts and engagement analytics obtained via Web data crawling, this study is, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, one of the first empirical studies to analyze influencer marketing and young consumers’ reactions to social media in China.
