In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Organisation theorists have consistently neglected considerations of societal and historical context in studies of power in organisations and this has resulted in incomplete and misconceived theories. This paper is concerned with an issue with which personnel managers often feel very personally involved, viz. the perceived erosion of managerial authority. In particular, the focus here is upon illuminating the confusions and assumptions inherent in the way in which managers in an industrial hierarchical organisation ‘structure’ their world as one in which managerial authority is continually being eroded and undermined. The paper, in examining the derivation of such ‘common sense’ assumptions, gives insights, from a radical perspective, into some of the misconceptions of power in organisations.

To be really effective, decisions concerning organisational succession need to take into consideration changing departmental needs and structures. There are many problems of diagnosis of training and development needs associated with such change. In addition, personnel managers have to disentangle a variety of perspectives stemming from personal preferences, prejudices and possible hidden agendas, since, of course, organisations are also networks of political pressure and intrigue.

The reluctance by end‐users and designers to consider the reassessment of environmental matters associated with the introduction of new technology into the office was investigated through interviews. A number of significant features of the initiating company's presenting problems were identified. Neglect of the environmental impact may be more a factor of lack of awareness than of resistance.

Flexibility in the design of offices can be designed in from the beginning and conditions can be provided which do not produce discomfort and hazardous working conditions. Trade unions are increasingly becoming concerned with the rapid introduction of information technology. A recent research project indicated the lack of awareness of potential environmental problems among architects, designers and managers.

The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.

Academics in industrial relations have for many years been attempting to define their field of study. Recently, we were asked, by a client interested in training, to find out how practitioners (managers and shop stewards) would react to a systems model of industrial relations. Their responses are reported here and suggest an approach to industrial relations training which may be helpful in clarifying, improving and changing practice.

A good deal of attention has been paid recently to the notion of management competence. One of the main strands of this has been promoted by the Council for Management Education and Development (CMED) in connection with the Management Charter Initiative and as part of the thrust towards developing Chartered Manager status.

This article describes the design and application of underwater cable location systems.

Discusses the manufacturing technology associated with the assembly of printed circuit boards [PCBs] covering photolithography, etching, manual assembly of PCBs and the soldering methods involved. Describes how all the stages of PCB assembly can be automated and also looks at how the boards are cleaned and tested. Concludes that many factors need to be taken into account when deciding which method of manufacturing printed circuits would be best suited to a company’s requirements.
