A business model going places? Premium airlines lay down a challenge for the big
Done K. and Bray R. Financial Times, 14 October 2005, Start Page: 17, No of Pages: 1
Purpose – To scrutinize the prospects for the new business model being introduced by Eos Airlines, and the implications for traditional carriers. Design/methodology/approach – Likens the new model to that created in 1971 by Southwest Airlines, the low-cost, low-fare airline that has prospered where its US network rivals have failed, and observes that this time the potential shake-up will be in the top end of the industry as Eos offers the world’s first all-business-class carrier, with its initial flights being on the lucrative London-New York route; details the premium that Eos is offering passengers over its nearest rivals such as BA, and muses on its chances of luring business customers to its new offering, and particularly its base at Stansted Airport, well outside London. Originality/value – Notes that previous challenges to the big transatlantic carriers have failed, but that Eos, and also upcoming Maxjet, have at least made it to the starting gate and may yet prove a thorn in the established airlines’ side.ISSN: 0307-1766Reference: 34AY660
