New product technology – into the blue!

Article Type: New products From: Pigment & Resin Technology, Volume 38, Issue 2

Intertronics sales partner DYMAX have created “See-Cure” technology as a visual indicator for their UV cure adhesives by colour changing from original blue to clear during the curing process. This innovative approach greatly aids industrial assembly processes, whether the application is medical, electronic, aerospace or automotive. In each case it is essential to know that sufficient adhesive has been dispensed and that a full cure is effected – “See-Cure” colour change technology enables this to be determined at a glance.

Intertronics MD Peter Swanson comments: “This is a brilliant and novel approach to dealing with problems of application, cure and clarity – exactly the kind of benefit our customers appreciate from a world leader like DYMAX.”

“See-Cure” UV adhesives are bright blue in colour in the uncured condition. This makes them easy to see on the surface of substrates, in deep wells, or when sandwiched between two layers of materials. The blue-coloured “See-Cure” adhesives will not permanently stain or affect the biocompatibility of the component surfaces that they contact. Because the blue colour is extremely visible, simple vision systems can be incorporated into assembly processes prior to curing, in order to easily identify adhesive coverage and profile.

But the “See-Cure” blue colour is only temporary! The adhesive’s blue colour becomes the visible indicator that identifies when sufficient light energy has been provided to the adhesive bond area to achieve full cure. As the adhesive cures, the blue colour within the adhesive fades and ultimately turns clear upon full cure. It is a timing mechanism that is specifically aligned with the adhesive’s natural cure speed.
