IAL Consultants have announced the publication of a new report for the Chinese printing inks sector in A Profile of the Chinese Printing Ink Industry.

The Chinese market for printing inks is estimated at almost 285,000 tonnes in 2004 and with average growth of 5.9 percent pa could reach a total of 379,000 tonnes by 2009. The market is dominated by vast volumes of offset inks and solvent-based inks, as shown in Figure 4

The Chinese printing ink industry is highly fragmented and has about 400 inkmakers, although only 30 are of any appreciable size. The majority of ink production in China originates from the facility investments made by multinationals or through their wholly- owned operations and subsidiaries in China, such as Toyo, T&K Toka and DIC. Among the leading indigenous producers are Shanghai Peony Printing Ink Co Ltd and Zhaoqing Tianlong Ink Chemical Co Ltd.

The greatest concentration of inkmakers is to be found in the Eastern and South Middle regions with about 100 inkmakers each and another 200 are spread throughout the other four administrative regions.

There is huge potential for development in the Chinese printing ink market, arising from a combination of relentless urbanisation and strong consumerism. Packaging is an enormous end-market, not only for food but also for milk and beer too, while publishing is making gains through the increased freedom enjoyed in contemporary Chinese culture, creating a boom for publication inks. Advertising is also a key sector, with China laying claim to the world's largest outdoor sign industry.

Rebecca Ransom, author of the report and a member of IAL's China Research Team said: “The Chinese ink market has grown rapidly since the early 1990's and there is still huge potential for future growth. Per capita consumption of inks is valued at only around US$30, well below the world average of US$56, and with the printing industry set to grow at 12 percent per annum over the next few years, China is set to become the new leader of the ink world”.
