Information Research (IRL) have announced the publication of a new report dedicated to the Brazilian coatings industry and market in a profile of the Brazilian paint industry.

Paint and coatings demand in Brazil is estimated at 1,491,000tonnes in 2004 and is expected to grow in line with GDP, typically at 3.3 percent pa over the next five years, to create a market of 1.75 million tonnes by 2009. The split of paint demand has been characterised as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1

Most markets are expected to grow at 3-4 percent pa but exceptions to this are the sectors of DIY decorative coatings and also powder coatings. The Brazilian DIY paint market is estimated at 82,000tonnes and likely to grow by 10 percent pa, as a result of the movement of more retailers into the Brazilian market and through increased spending power. In 2005 the market is expected to see competition become increasingly vigorous as a result of each of the four multinational BASF, ICI, Sherwin-Williams and Akzo Nobel in the sector allocating bigger budgets for marketing and launches, in an attempt to lure the Brazilian populace away from the regional Brazilian paint companies. However, economy paints are the preferred type in Brazil as low-cost solutions for the home suit low levels of disposable income.

The 30,000-tonne Brazilian powder coatings market can also expect growth of about 10 percent pa as a result of continued substitution for liquid industrial coatings (Figure 2). Powder coatings demand in Brazil is open to regional variations but plays to a strong cross-section of applications.

Huge levels of investment, including a strong programme of state expenditure on construction, will bring much promise to the paint and coatings industry in Brazil.

Dr Terry Knowles, Business Manager at IRL and author of the report said: “Brazil is primed for growth as it enters 2005. An estimated 12 million houses are needed in Brazil, which will create demand for all parts of the building paints sector. Furthermore, infrastructure is being revitalised, the automotive sector is expected to turn the corner and the manufacturing industry has export fever, largely through government initiatives abroad. Large levels of investment are anticipated in the coatings sector and in many end-user industries, which creates a very propitious time for all involved in the Brazilian paint and coatings industry”.
