UV/EB market continues strong growth

UV/EB market continues strong growth

Keywords: Coatings, Curing, UV

During 1999 the UV/EB technology market grew just over 10 percent, according to Kenneth Lawson, DSM Coating Resins, in his study prepared for RadTech with the input of 99 industry members representing 65 organisations: "Status of UV/EB Curing in North America – 2000."

"Total sales volume of UV/EB formulations has expanded from about 45,000 metric tons in 1995 to 70,000 metric tons in 1999 (154 million pounds) and our respondents expect high industry growth rates to continue," says Lawson. "Growth of UV/EB curable products in the years 2000-2005 is expected to be 8-10 percent, with several respondents projecting their own growth in the range of 11-30+ percent per year."

While graphic arts and wood finishing represent the largest market segments, several smaller areas have grown dramatically at rates of 25 percent annually or more, including fiber optics and computerized solid modeling. Newer applications, such as optical and pressure-sensitive adhesives, automotive parts and UV curable powders are also growing rapidly. From a small base, impactless printing (jet inks/digital printing) and medical devices are also growing rapidly.
