P&O Trans European has worked for Chemitrade, a UK solvents distributor, on a spot hire basis for many years. Now the company, part of Ellis & Everard, has awarded P&O Trans European's Roadtanks division a major contract.
Under the deal, P&O Trans European has been awarded contracts on four vehicles. It will supply three brand new multi-compartment tanks and tractor units, plus an existing multi-pot rig from within the fleet. This, we are told, represents a third of Chemitrade's distribution fleet.
The specialised nature of the road tankers reflects the diversity of the solvents distribution industry, which involves the delivery of small quantities of a wide range of products to numerous locations. The vehicles and drivers are based at P&O Trans European's Ellesmere Port depot, but work out of Chemitrade's depot at Cadishead, Manchester. Most orders are organised on the previous working day to ensure early despatch the following morning, with tankers being loaded on a Friday for departure early on the Monday morning. With each of the new tankers equipped with seven compartments, giving a total capacity of 35,000 litres, three to four customers can be accommodated at once. Deliveries are also made on a regional basis to optimise tanker utilisation.
A variety of solvents, such as iso propanol, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene and acetones, are carried to Chemitrade's customers in the paint, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries.
