Trimite reports that it has introduced a new compliant isocyanate, two-pack, high solids acrylic polyurethane finish, specially formulated to reduce VOC emissions in line with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act, 1990.
Aimed at general industrial and domestic appliance coating applications, the Trimite "B461" range is said to be extremely hardwearing, has excellent exterior durability and colour retention, and retains the benefits of conventional isocyanate-cured polyurethanes. It can be applied to metals, plastics or wood and is believed to be particularly suitable for use as an aesthetically pleasing spatter finish at low gloss levels.
The range is available in matt, semi-matt, semi-gloss and gloss finishes (0 to 80 per cent when measured on a 60° glossmeter) in BS, RAL, and NCS colours, and can be custom colour matched. It is also available as a clear lacquer. Coverage is approximately 10m2 per litre of mixed material, calculated on a dry film thickness of 25mm by conventional spray application.
Trimite also informs us that another of its new products, "J2904" Electromagnetic Shield Coating for plastic substrates, has been developed specifically to meet the latest US and European regulations on the control of electrical interference.
The coating has been formulated using specially prepared metallic nickel to ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) on component housings employed, for example, in computers and other electronic civil and military communication or data processing equipment. The coating has been approved by the US Underwriters Laboratory Inc.
Trimite reports that it is highly conductive, giving a resistance of less than 0.5ohms/sq. when applied correctly, Trimite's J2904 provides effective shielding against radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
The manufacturers also report that the coating can be applied directly to thermoplastics and suitably primed glass reinforced polyesters and phenolics, SMC, DMC and polyurethane foam mouldings. J2904 air-dries rapidly to a metallic grey finish and has been formulated to minimise settlement both in the container and in application equipment supply lines. It can be used in conventional spraying systems and covers approximately 5m2 per litre (calculated on a dry film thickness of 50mm).
