Hand-held instrument to measure colour on any surface
Hand-held instrument to measure colour on any surface
Keywords Colour, GretagMacbeth, Measurement
GretagMacbeth claims to have taken the lead in portable colour measuring instrumentation by introducing a hand-held instrument to measure colour quickly, easily and accurately on the most challenging surfaces curved or flat, smooth or textured, large or small. A sphere-based spectrophotometer, the lightweight ColorEye XTH incorporates XT5 technology which uses a two-dimensional CCD to capture five frames (or channels) of measurement data simultaneously. Accuracy and repeatability of measurements are consistent with readings from GretagMacbeth's benchtop ColorEye 7000 and 2180 spectrophotometers (Plate 10).
Thought to be ideal for almost any colour measurement application, its menu-driven operation and dedicated standard and trial buttons significantly reduce start-up training time. 3D targeting, removable foot and optional dual apertures (10mm and 4mm diameter) enable a single unit to perform precise, repeatable colour measurements on the broadest range of part sizes, eliminating the expense of multiple instruments.

According to GretagMcbeth, XT5 technology represents the first major advance in sphere-based spectrophotometry for over 25 years, allowing simultaneous measurement of specular component excluded (SCE) for colour and appearance, and specular component included (SCI) for pure colour measurement, resulting in optimum measurement accuracy and data integrity.
A sophisticated high-speed processor allows the ColorEye XTH to make one colour measurement per second, giving increased throughput. And the Xenon flash system eliminates the need to take multiple readings when measuring dark colours.
The instrument's multilingual capability includes English, French, German, Italian and Spanish and will accommodate two user-defined languages.
An advanced power management system gives extended battery life and allows continued operation even when charging, greatly increasing system availability. The XTH can also be mounted on robotic equipment for automated operation.
