London-based pump distributor CCD has expanded its activities in the industrial chemicals industry following an agreement with the UK subsidiary of Robbins & Myers.

The agreement covers a series of progressing cavity pumps designed to handle a variety of materials including acids, solvents, resins, adhesives and chemical slurries.

Recent contracts include an installation at Henkel Surface Technologies' Belvedere (Kent) factory where the pumps handle underseal seam sealers and underbody coatings used by leading vehicle makers including Ford, Jaguar, LDV, Honda, Rover and Peugeot (Plate 6).

"The agreement represents a major diversification beyond our traditional activities in the building services sector", says CCD sales director Tom McHenry.

"We are also offering a total applications engineering facility including various add-on features for the product such as bedplate mounting, variable speed drives and dry running protection devices."

Mr McHenry stressed that spares would also be available which were fully compatible with pumps manufactured under the original licensing agreement covering the Moineau patent in 1936.

There are over 800 pumps in the R&M series including crowned gear and sealed pin joint, open throat, close-coupled and bare shaft models with flow rates of up to 425m3/hr at maximum pressures of 36 bar and temperatures of 220°C.

The key components of a progressing cavity pump are the rotor a single external helix which turns within the stator (a double internal helix) to form cavities which progress and convey material from the suction to the discharge end of the unit.

CCD, formed in 1952, is a founder member of the Pump Distributors Association, providing off-the-shelf delivery of many leading brands.

However, the company is also a specialist manufacturer of packaged pumping sets including cold water boosters and fire hosereel units and provides comprehensive supply, installation, servicing and repair facilities for all types of pumps.

The company operates from a head office south of the Thames while at the same time maintaining a factory nearby together with depot facilities at Leyton Business Centre in North London.
