Millennium Chemicals Inc. (NYSF) ("MCH") announced the opening of a new sales office in Shanghai. Opening ceremonies were hosted by William M. Landuyt, chairman and chief executive officer of Millennium Chemicals Inc., and Denis A. Payne, Millennium Inorganic Chemicals' ("MIC") senior vice president business development Asia/Pacific and managing director Asia/Pacific region. Steven Yip, MIC general manager China sales, has been named to head the new office. Shanghai will be the first sales office representing all three operating companies of MCH.

Robert E. Lee, president and chief excecutive officer MIC, has announced that regional headquarters for Europe, including sales and marketing, will move to Brussels from Stallingborough, UK in the spring of 1999.

MIC operates plants in Thann and Le Havre, France, in addition to the recently expanded facility in Stallingborough. The UK plant was recently upgraded to a nameplate capacity of 150,000 metric tons per annum, increasing MIC's total capacity in Europe from 109,000 metric tons in 1997 to more than 290,000 metric tons in 1999. "The market in Europe continues to be strong", said Lee. "We look for the new currency to boost the entire region."

Lee also announced that regional headquarters in Latin America will move to São Paulo from Rio de Janiero. "Our sales force is already located in São Paulo", said Lee. "The move puts sales and management together under one roof in one of the world's most exciting cities." With our joint ventures partner Kemwater, we are also building a co-products plant on our Bahia site that will turn waste from the plant into water treatment chemicals. MIC operates a titanium dioxide plant in Bahia and a mineral sands mine in Paraiba, Brazil.

The joint venture with Kemwater of São Paulo is scheduled to begin production next year.
