Keyword Elcometer

The staff of Elcometer Instruments Ltd, the Manchester-based specialist in instrumentation for the testing and quality control of coating processes, recently celebrated 40 years of service by the founder and managing director, Ian Sellars.

Ian Sellars has been running Elcometer since 1962 and has built up a worldwide network of dealers and distributors so that Elcometer products can be bought through local sources in all the industrial countries.

Over the same period, Ian Sellars has been heavily involved in coating thickness gauge development, from the early magnetic, mechanical designs to the current electronic gauges with memory, statistical analysis and printout capability, making Elcometer a leading manufacturer and supplier of coating thickness gauges.

Other coatings-related test equipment has been added to the Elcometer range during Ian Sellars' time with the company. Surface preparation tests for blast cleaning profile and cleanliness, climatic condition monitoring, material thickness measurement, holiday detection, adhesion testing and gloss measurement all make the Elcometer product range applicable to most coating quality control applications.

In addition, a new division called Dataputer has been created to develop and supply statistical process control (SPC) solutions to all types of organisations. The knowledge gathered by the Dataputer team has been used to develop the first SPC coating thickness system, the Elcometer 365.

Ian Sellars has presided over the winning by Elcometer of two Queens Awards, one for export and one for technological achievement and the accreditation of the Company to ISO 9002.
