Jerry Seiner, distinguished PPG scientist, has died

Jerome A. (Jerry) Seiner, 65, inventor or co-inventor for more than 80 US patents during a distinguished 42-year career with PPG Industries, died 21 July 1998 of pancreatic cancer.

Seiner, who retired 1 June 1998, was named corporate fellow and member of the PPG Collegium, the company's highest scientific recognition, in 1994.

He joined PPG as a coatings development engineer in 1954 after receiving a degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. After two years of service with the Army Chemical Corp., he returned to PPG in 1957.

He was named advanced coatings research group scientist in 1968 and spent the 1968-69 academic year conducting polymer research at Case Western Reserve University.

Seiner was appointed manager of resin products in 1970, and two years later became senior scientist in charge of exploratory trade sales research. He was named director of advanced coatings research in 1984.

His accomplishments included initiating PPG's development of gas barrier coatings, fire-protective mastics, beverage can spray liners and latex vinyl chloride copolymers for wood primers, all of which became commercial products.

Seiner wrote and co-wrote papers for numerous publications during his PPG career. A member of the American Chemical Society, he had been senior editor of the ACS journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research since 1987 and previously edited an edition of that journal for a number of years.

Seiner is survived by his wife, Nancy, four children and seven grandchildren.
