Weight loss medication

Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 39, Issue 5.

alli or orlistat has been available on prescription for years. GSK have a licence to sell the 60 mg dose through pharmacies for people BMI 28 and over. There has been considerable pharmacy training to ensure it is correctly sold. The drug is a lipase inhibitor and this enhances weight loss by 50 per cent (i.e. for every 2 lb normally lost you would lose 3 lb). Dietary fat needs to be controlled and the appropriate diet is essentially a reduced fat and calorie diet based on around 30 per cent energy from fat.

The product, alli, went on sale in April together with the diet book that accompanies the drug.
