Relationship between insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular disease

The European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR) was formed in 1992 and supports continuous collaboration between members through meetings, symposia and active research. The first combined activity was a data-pooling project from euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp studies, and the most recent has been the EU sponsored RISC study.

The RISC study is the largest study of its kind using the “gold standard” euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp technique. The project's primary objective is to answer the question of whether insulin resistance is a risk factor for progression of carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT, an index of CVD) independently of other risk factors such as lipids, body weight, haemostatic and inflammatory factors. Insulin sensitivity was evaluated in 1,300 participants, in 21 research centres across Europe, and results from the three-year follow-up are now becoming available.
