New degree for social scientists

Health Minister John Hutton recently announced the introduction of a three year degree in social work from 2003. Improving and extending the training and educational qualifications required by social workers is part of a wider strategy for raising standards in social care in the UK. Social work needs to be recognised as an important and valued professional career, seen by young people as an attractive job choice. The new training will take longer than the current diploma with a strengthening of the content to include practical learning and relevant academic knowledge. The current two-year diploma will continue until the new arrangements come into force in 2003.
