Illegal meat seizures

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health concurs with a recent warning by the Association of Port Health Authorities urging stricter controls to prevent illegal imports of contaminated meat products into the UK. Port Health Officers have warned of serious deficiencies in controls to prevent illegal meat products imported into the country, thought to be a cause of foot and mouth disease. The illegal meat is entering the country concealed in containers of fruit and vegetables or smuggled through airport terminals. Anything that is labelled fruit and vegetables can be moved from the airport and end up in neighbouring boroughs.
