Sexual attitudes and lifestyles
The first national survey of sexual attitudes and lifestyles, funded by the Wellcome Trust, took place in 1990/91 and was published in 1994. The Department of Health under the auspices of the Medical Research Council has funded a development project in preparation for a second national survey. Announcing the survey Dr Jeremy Metters, Deputy Chief Medical Officer said that the results from the 1990 national survey which were extremely valuable in planning health promotion programmes are now out of date. The new survey will help in the understanding of patterns of sexual behaviour that puts particular groups at increased risk. The new information will help in the development of more effective health promotion methods, particularly in the planning of health services dealing with sexually transmitted diseases including those for people living with HIV and AIDS. The survey will be spread over three years and will cost £1.4 million. The survey will consist of around 12,000 men and women aged 16 to 44 years resident in Great Britain. The high risk groups are seen as homosexual/bisexual men, injecting drug users and men and women who have links with high prevalence countries, currently sub-Saharan Africa.
