Smoking statistics

In 1996 28 per cent of adults aged 15 and over smoked, 28 per cent of men and 27 per cent of women. The prevalence of smoking among adults has dropped substantially since 1976, when 41 per cent of people smoked, although in recent years the rate of decline has slowed and may have reversed. The prevalence of smoking is higher for people in manual than non-manual socio-economic groups, 34 per cent compared with 22 per cent. In 1996, 13per cent of children aged 11 to 15 years regularly smoked cigarettes, 11 per cent of boys and 15 per cent of girls. Smoking is thought to be implicated in one in five deaths. In the UK, two-thirds of smokers wanted to give up the habit and three-fifths of respondents thought that tobacco advertising should not be allowed at all.
