Food hygiene initiative for schools

Food hygiene initiative for schools

The Health Education authority will receive 550,000 ecus, about £370,000 from the European Union in 1988/99 to mount a food education initiative in secondary schools throughout the UK. Food Safety Minister Jeff Rooker said that we are living in a fast moving society where people sometimes forget the basics of food hygiene. It is important that young people in our schools have the opportunity to learn the simple rules of food hygiene and to understand why they are so important in helping to reduce the risk of food poisoning. The campaign will involve developing a teaching resource specifically designed to be compatible with various curriculum requirements throught the UK. The resource will be available to every secondary school in the UK. This UK initiative is being funded as part of a European Union-wide Food Safety Campaign funded by the European Commission. The Health Education Authority submitted the bid with the support of MAFF as part of a consortium of a wide range of interests including government departments and representative bodies of the consumer, farming and food industries and public health sectors. Since 1995 the HEA has been the national co-ordinator of European Health Promoting Schools now active in 38 countries.
