The Torrington Company introduces new Machine Tool Spindle Bearing Series, incorporating Genuine CERBEC silicon nitride balls
The Torrington Company introduces new Machine Tool Spindle Bearing Series, incorporating Genuine CERBEC silicon nitride ballsKeywords: Machine tools, Bearings
The Torrington Company is pleased to introduce its new Fafnir True High Speed Sealed Bearings (THSS), incorporating Genuine CERBEC silicon nitride ceramic balls for machine tool spindles (see Plate 1). This new, high quality, super-precision machine tool spindle bearing, incorporating CERBEC balls, is designed to deliver high speeds, high accuracy and long service life. The maintenance-free, dynamic, non-contact seals are optimally manufactured to keep out contamination. These seals retain the grease inside the bearing, making them maintenance-free lubricated bearings. The THSS bearings reduce heat generation and operating temperatures, which help to increase speeds up to 600,000DN (700,000DM) due to proper lubrication.

Fafnir THSS bearings increase bearing service life, precision, accuracy and superior dynamic performance. The CERBEC silicon nitride components enable the bearings' higher operating temperatures and better performance due to lubrication degradation. Finally, the Fafnir THSS bearing design enables improvements in performance, as there are less skidding, decreased contact angle variation, dynamic stiffness and better radial play in the bearing.
Genuine CERBEC silicon nitride ceramic balls are harder, stiffer, lighter, smoother, lower in thermal expansion, electrical conductivity, provide longer life, higher speeds and enhance overall performance in Torrington's Fafnir THSS bearings. Shelia Cowles (Torrington's General Manager – Machine Tool and Aerospace) acknowledges, "Torrington has been using CERBEC ceramic balls for high speed and high performance applications, which has helped improve our customers' productivity and overall performance". CERBEC is the most widely used silicon nitride ball in the machine tool and super precision bearing industry.
Together, CERBEC and Torrington with their advanced engineering and technology strive to provide innovative, cost-effective solutions, which improve product performance.
