New grease is hot stuffKeywords: Greases, Bearings
A new high temperature bearing grease has been unveiled by SKF. Designated LGHP 2, the lubricant is ideal for sealed for life bearings where noise level is also a consideration (Plate 7).
LGHP 2 is a polyurea type grease which is a technology originally developed in the USA and refined in Japan. The main characteristics of the new SKF grease are a broad operating temperature range, from –40°C to +150°C, greater grease cleanliness, increased ageing resistance and low noise. The grease also offers exceptional corrosion protection and high thermal stability, and is compatible with lithium complex thickened greases (such as SKF's LGHQ 3) and common polyurea greases.

LGHP 2 will be used where ball bearings face elevated operating speeds and temperatures and in any ball or roller bearing applications where long service life is required. Typical applications include electric motors, hot fans, water pumps, rolling bearings in textiles, paper processing and drying machine installations.
For years, LGHQ 3 grease, a lithium complex technology unique to SKF, was a standard for high temperature applications. Indeed, this grease remains the best in its class. While SKF now recommends the superior performance of the new LGHP 2 for most high temperature applications, the former lithium complex grease remains the preferred choice for vertical shaft applications and therefore remains available.
