The technical articles in this issue cover three different but related topics.

The paper from Padgurskas and colleagues reports on work to improve the life of radial lip seals. This type of seal is widely used in many different types of machinery. The work done shows benefits from changes to the seal material and to the surface condition to the shaft.

The Domeir paper puts some numbers to the frictional comparisons that can be made between different types of MoS2. As well as "oilmen" this work should also be of interest to grease formulators. MoS2 has been traditionally used in greases to overcome fretting corrosion and to provide lubrication in reciprocating mechanisms when the grease carrier" is wiped away.

The Kuhn paper details investigations into the energy characteristics of different greases and will hopefully promote more work and comments in this area.

All these papers share a common theme of basic research work which could possibly result in immediate benefit to lubricant formulators, seal producers and of course their customers.

Use of NVQs for sales staff

Klüber, the specialist lubricants company, seems to be establishing a new idea in the lubricants industry. KlÏber is using Sales NVQs as part of its selling culture. This is not uncommon in other industries but is a new approach in the lubricants sales area. It will be interesting to hear of the long-term experience and also to see if any competitors follow suit.
