Dear Reader,
It is beyond doubt that structures fail by interactive mechanisms. As engineers, scientists, researchers, and academics, it is our duty to tackle such complex problems by breaking them down into separate mechanisms, understanding those mechanisms, finding the interactions and trying to deliver applicable solutions. The process of course, is not easy, and yet nothing has been in these last 200 years of engineering practice.
Today, the research means we have are much more sophisticated while necessitating significant specialisation and expertise. From computational metallurgy to neutron diffraction, the research field related to structural integrity has widened so much that it is difficult to keep track of what is happening and published. For many years I have had the opinion that such wealth of research information works as a double blade. This is especially critical for young researchers finding themselves somehow lost in such a phenomenal wealth of data which, in some cases, are also contradicting.
Of course, an endeavour like the International Journal of Structural Integrity is not going to be a panacea to the problem but at least provides a small foundation to the house of interdisciplinary research.
