The authors in the introduction state: “This book is for practising and aspiring primary headteachers. It is a modest attempt to reassert a view of primary headship which is rooted in reality rather than the mechanistic fantasy of managerialism … We believe that educational leadership should demonstrate particular characteristics which are founded in educational philosophy rather than market economics”.

The book ranges over a wide number of topics including: working with parents and the community; working with staff; school development planning.

The authors argue their point of view very cogently and from a well‐researched base. It is a challenging study and should be read by all interested in making sure that the nation’s primary schools get the very best in leadership. It makes a valuable contribution to the debate on what characteristics make a successful primary teacher.

It has an excellent bibliography.
