Whats on the web
Article Type: What’s on the web From: Human Resource Management International Digest, Volume 17, Issue 7
Top content
This site does not look too promising at first glance – an “off-the-shelf” design means that the occasional browser might easily pass it by. However give it but a moment of your time and it quickly proves to be a really superb site for articles, HR tools and information. There is an enormous amount of useful stuff here – up-to-date news, interesting articles and entertaining blogs all abound.
There is only one criticism of this excellent site and that is that it is completely US-oriented with barely a passing nod to the rest of the world. If someone could only internationalize it a little it would be a strong challenger to the very best HR web sites.
Guiding light
HRM Guide publishes articles and news releases about HR surveys, employment law, human resource research, HR books and careers that bridge the gap between theory and practice.
The site has a nice fresh feel to it without any clutter or extraneous graphics. More importantly it contains a huge range of articles on every aspect of HR (and a number of important related topics).
There is no need to register nor is there any cost involved; this must be one of the best resources on the web. Bookmark it now.
Faithful friend
Fidelity Investments is an international provider of financial services and investment resources that help individuals and institutions meet their financial objectives.
Although the site itself is a little dull, it has something of an old fashioned bank about it, this does have the benefit of giving it a respectable “trustworthy” feeling.
Of particular interest to HR professionals will be the company’s Workplace Savings section. This has useful information about retirement planning, and interactive worksheets, investment primers and easy-to-understand publications and may be a valuable resource for employees considering their savings options.
Helping to manage
TimeClock Plus™ is a time and attendance solutions for employee labour tracking developed by Data Management Inc. It was developed and marketed soon after the company was founded in 1988 and is aimed primarily at small and medium-sized businesses. The company also provides a visitor pass system and a number of other interesting-looking HR products.
Their site is clean and simple and promotes the image of a people-friendly company. It would be improved by a direct product link on the home page (it is not always easy to discover the full range) but otherwise works well.
Working world
http://www.worldatwork.org
WorldatWork claims to be the world’s leading not-for-profit professional association dedicated to knowledge leadership in total rewards, compensation, benefits, and work-life. If this seems a fairly large claim, it is also a little confusing. Not everyone knows what the jargon means for example – some plain English on the site might help.
Founded in 1955, WorldatWork focuses on HR disciplines associated with attracting, motivating and retaining employees. Besides serving as the membership association of the professions, the WorldatWork family of organizations provides education, certification, publications, knowledge resources, surveys, conferences, research and networking.
The site itself is a little dull – it feels a bit like a rather complicated form – but there are some really useful things here if you dig deep enough. For example the recently launched Online Community looks promising. Open to the public, this community is designed to give compensation, benefits, work-life and rewards professionals a virtual forum to interact and connect with industry peers.
And finally
From this year’s Darwin awards: The chef at a hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat cutting machine and submitted a claim to his insurance company. The company were suspicious of the claim and sent out one of its men to have a look for himself. He tried the machine and he also lost a finger. The chef’s claim was approved.
Best of all
For a particularly interesting and useful site you could always try the Emerald one!
