Article Type: Abstracts From: Human Resource Management International Digest, Volume 17, Issue 7

Purpose – discusses how the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust has addressed a bullying culture by introducing a set of behaviors covering all employees and complemented by a Dignity at Work policy. Design/methodology/approach – describes the background of the organization and how it undertook internal research into its culture. Looks at the behaviors framework, which was designed to ensure that every employee was clear about the expected behaviors and desired ways of working in the organization, and its implementation, which includes forming a key element of the employee appraisal process. Discusses how complaints are dealt with and the mechanisms used to try and measure the progress of culture change. Notes how the Trust scored in the latest NHS staff survey. Provides an inset which describes the Trust and another which contains extracts of the behaviors framework. Findings – considers that the success of the policy is down to getting buy-in throughout the organization by constant reinforcement of the core message. Originality/value – shows how a bullying culture can be successfully changed.ISSN: 0268-7143Reference: 38AM139
