Purpose – Explains how best to exploit web-based recruiting tools. Design/methodology/approach – Presents some basics for using the internet to connect with the right candidates. Findings – An effective recruitment strategy uses the internet to connect hiring managers more quickly with great candidates and to widen the pool of qualified talent but used poorly, it can be a dead end and a significant waste of time. Contends that the only way to recruit effectively is to use multiple channels, that there needs to be an accurate, well-written, exciting job description and that the ad should be posted in several places online. Suggests relying on job boards, social networks and headhunting marketplaces for directly producing applicant flow but warns that there is minimal screening with these and so commercial job boards are best for low-level or multiple positions. To go directly to candidates with the right experience, however, recommends job boards run by professional associations – although these may get very little traffic. Also urges setting strict screening standards and acting quickly. Originality/value – Asserts that if online recruiting resources are leveraged well, in-person connections can be made faster and more efficient. ISSN: 0163-7517 Reference: 37AR816
