Purpose – Presents a report on human resource outsourcing in the USA. Design/methodology/approach – Reviews the general trends in human resource outsourcing in the USA; discusses the metrics that companies are using to assess service quality; considers the differences between how human resource outsourcing has been handled in the past and how it is being handled currently; and identifies good practice. Illustrates the report with examples of how firms such as Unilever, Lockheed Martin and Du Pont have handled their human resource outsourcing, discussing mistakes that have been made and the lessons learned. Findings – Argues that corporate culture should guide how human resource outsourcing is handled and the objectives set for it.
