Purpose – describes how Arriva, the European transport services provider that operates bus and rail services in the UK, has implemented a diversity strategy that has had a major influence on attitudes and behaviour throughout its business. Design/methodology/approach – explains why the firm launched its diversity strategy, how it was developed and what it contained, and how it was implemented. Identifies its impact on human resource practices and the diversity of the workforce. Findings – reports that the company has broken out of the stereotypical attitudes that limited the employment of women and people from ethnic minorities within the firm. Among the diversity initiatives that achieved this, cites the annual diversity benchmarking, the significant amount of training that was delivered and the identification of actions that would promote diversity (the extension of flexible working, the extension of employee feedback to focus on under-represented groups, and the use of local demographic data to inform recruitment campaigns. Practical implications – gives details of the actions taken by Arriva to increase the diversity of its workforce.
