Training providers and HR specialists visit Rotterdam College
Training opportunities and ideas for the future were under discussion when the Haven Gateway Partnership (HGP) led a delegation of training providers and HR representatives on a visit to the International Shipping and Transport College in Rotterdam. “The college is internationally renowned for its excellence”, said Richard Morton, Project Manager for the HGP's Maritime and Logistics Skills Centre (MaLSC). “We visited to see what they do and how they do it. It was really to get an understanding of how the college is set up and what the partnerships are between college, government and employers to make sure they have the skills needed for the future”.
The Haven Gateway covers the Haven ports of Felixtowe, Harwich, Ipswich and Mistley. The visitors' interest had a particular focus on engineering, because this is one of the predicted possible skills shortages in the future. Haven Gateway's education and skills group will now discuss how to move forward to deliver the skills needed for the region's ports and general logistics industry, with the possibility of tapping into Rotterdam's expertise, where appropriate. “We wanted to show the training providers and the potential new university for Suffolk the possibilities in logistics and transport – including the whole range, from leadership to practical delivery of qualifications”, said Mr Morton.
