Norway outlines proposals to increase student grants

Higher student grants and restructuring of the degree system are among the proposals in a Norwegian higher-education White Paper, Do Your Duty, Demand Your Rights.

Other proposals include allowing higher education colleges to rename themselves universities, providing universities with greater autonomy and making more efficient use of the academic year. In addition, the White Paper suggests that Norwegian higher education institutions should co-operate more with their counterparts in other European countries, and that there should be more student exchanges. One idea is to offer exchange opportunities as part of all degree programmes in Norway.

The Norwegian Government will "evaluate the possibility of reallocating resources to strengthen the internationalization strategies in higher-education institutions". The White Paper has not yet been translated into English. Nevertheless, further information is available on the Internet, at http://www.odin.dep.no/odin/norsk/publ/stemeld.
