Flanders opts for three-year degrees

Flanders opts for three-year degrees

Universities in the Flanders region of Belgium are adopting the British system of awarding a first degree after three years of higher education study and a master's degree after four. They currently award a diploma after two years and a graduate diploma after four. The new system will come into operation for first-year students within the next five years. This means that the first bachelor's and master's degrees are likely to be awarded in eight and nine years' time, respectively.

Meanwhile, work placements are to be introduced into the Flemish vocational education system to attract more young people into vocational streams. The Flemish minister of education wishes to make it compulsory for young people in part-time vocational education to gain vocational experience on the other three days of the week. Some 30 establishments will launch a pilot project in September 2002 in which pupils will spend half their learning time in the workplace.
