Young people need construction industry help

Keywords Construction industry, Young people

A large number of applications for grants to help young people in the construction industry to start or complete building-related training are being received by the Construction Industry Trust for Youth.

As a result, the charity is urging businesses related to the construction industry to consider giving money to increase the number of financially disadvantaged 16- to 25-year-olds who get a chance to study. Subjects offered can range from stonemasonry to architecture, at levels from technician to graduate. Finance is also provided for youth-club building projects.

Meanwhile, Further Education Funding Council figures show that the number of students studying construction in further education rose by 10 per cent between 1994-1995 and 1996-1997. Most enrolments were for NVQ level 2 and below. Increases occurred in general construction, gas supply and installation and construction site work. Some 93 per cent of people enrolled were male, one in five students was 40 or over and few students were from non-white ethnic minority groups.
