Abstract

Programmed instruction has been in use in the UK now for about seven years, although similar teaching methods have been in use much longer. The beginnings of what we might call recent developments could be discerned about three years ago in the preachings if not the practices of the experts. At that time there were two rival styles of program: linear constructed response and branching multi‐choice. Then programmers started writing linear programs which instead of asking the student to write down his own answer called upon him to select one from a list. If he selected wrongly he discovered this but received no extra material. These heretical programmers also upset the dichotomy by writing branching programs which made the student construct his own answer and write it down before being allowed to match his answer with a list provided.
